Gila/metra hybrid

Anyone successfully using the gila piston in your metra80? I've noticed that there is some speculation that this might work since they are almost identical except the two holes in the gila piston on the intake side. So, if anyone is running this combo successfully, please share your experience. Because mine has not been pleasant.

I know it's been done a bunch the other way around (MK piston in a gila), but I've never heard of people doing the gila piston in a MK. Just outta curiousity...why would you?

Re: Gila/metra hybrid

availability. The gila piston is readily available in the U.S

I don't think its going to work with the holes in the piston. Gotta remember the gila has reeds, and those holes don't really matter because the reeds close off the ports, with the metra those would be exposed and cause some issues. I know it works the other way around. Don't think gila would work in metra. Email treats, I believe he has oversize pistons for metra.

also the gila piston is not equal on both sides.

also where do you get em so easy?

Re: Gila/metra hybrid

treats has all the gila pistons you want. From what I found with the gila piston in the metra is that the shit won't run at all, the speed holes in the piston open up the intake port on the exhaust stroke before the transfers open. Most if not all the fresh crankcase charge goes the way of the dodo, out the carb = no run. I didn't know if anyone else had tried it. For me, it didn't work. unless you threw some fancy reed set-up on the metra somehow.

Re: Gila/metra hybrid

the metra piston isn't equal on both sides either by the way.

the intake side piston skirt is shorter. the difference between the gila and metra piston on the skirt length is about 1mm

longer skirt on the gila.
