Uni Air Filter doesn't fit on Tomos a55 carb

Hi,

So I got myself the Carburetor speed kit upgrade from 1977Mopeds: http://www.1977mopeds.com/catalog/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=36_115&products_id=420

The jets fit perfectly but the air filter doesn't. It is a Uni UP-4125ST 1 1/4" and as much as I tried - it wouldn't fit on the carb. Even if I got it on it would immediately pop off because of it's small diameter. So I am now wondering if it they send me a wrong model or if I need a converter or if it is meant to fit on another carburetor than the stock one... can anybody help me out with this?

Thanks,

Boris

Did you unscrew the screw on the clasp that goes around the top of the filter? Because if that is tightened down, it prolly would be difficult.

it should fit. Call them up and see if by chance they sent you the wrong one. it should fit fine, snug, but fine.

Re: Uni Air Filter doesn't fit on Tomos a55 carb

I had a similar problem, but i got the uni pod on after a lot of struggeling. if you have a dremmel, use the sanding tool to sand down the inside of the filter - this helps a lot to get a little more room to push it on.

Re: Uni Air Filter doesn't fit on Tomos a55 carb

I have had the same problem, just no solution yet.

Re: Uni Air Filter doesn't fit on Tomos a55 carb

I even removed the clamp, but if I don't hold the filter super tight against the carb it immediately slips off. It doesn't seem to be possible too tighten the clamp while pressing the filter.

There is a bigger version of the filter with 1 1/2" - that one has the part # UP-4152ST. Maybe they twisted twisted the number and that is why I received 4125.. does anyone have the packing around or knows otherwise to confirm/contradict that suspicion?

Re: Uni Air Filter doesn't fit on Tomos a55 carb

bk,

I put the uni pod filter on a similar carb. it was really tough to put on.

like i said before, if you dremmel out some of the rubber on the inside of the filter, you can get it on. I really had to loosen the clamp, and force the filter on. Then i tightened the clamp, but not TOO tight or it will push it off.

The dremmeling really helped, i would try that before going through the hassle to get another filter. just me though =)

Re: Uni Air Filter doesn't fit on Tomos a55 carb

OK - so I managed to get that thing on (thanks for the good words) but the ped makes a really awful sound now. Sounds like the engine is running in some hollow space now. Is that normal? Can I do something about it? Is it maybe better to make a couple of holes into the air box instead of the uni filter?

I like the improved speed though...

Re: Uni Air Filter doesn't fit on Tomos a55 carb

Without an airbox the engine is going to make a lot more noise. The air box is designed to help keep intake roar down.

Re: Uni Air Filter doesn't fit on Tomos a55 carb

mmh, makes sense... what if I drill a couple of holes into the airbox, and leave the larger jets of course - do you think that would work?

Re: Uni Air Filter doesn't fit on Tomos a55 carb

no.

Re: Uni Air Filter doesn't fit on Tomos a55 carb

a better breathing carburetor = a louder breathing carburetor.

yay speed kit!!! fast fast fasstttt!!!!

Re: Uni Air Filter doesn't fit on Tomos a55 carb

That is what happened to my 1 1/4" filter.

Now, a new question, would a 1 1/2" fit, or would it be too lose?

Thanks,

Ken

Re: Uni Air Filter doesn't fit on Tomos a55 carb

Problem Solved.

I measure my stock air filter which fits with stock 14 mm. carb, comes out to be very close to 1 1/2". That is the reason why everyone has more difficulty fitting an UNI 1 1/4 and me ripping it showed in the last post.

Therefore, buy the UP4152 1 1/2" Straight or Angled, it's your choice. I prefer Angled.

Re: Uni Air Filter doesn't fit on Tomos a55 carb

Bunch of women in this thread. Not moped chicks, who are rad and know how to install an air filter, but the helpless girly kind.

Re: Uni Air Filter doesn't fit on Tomos a55 carb

Toss that uni in the trash can and do this. break>

It's quiet, easy, and flows as much as you want.

Oh yeah that that guy "Hi, I'm Lance Campeau from LanceCampeau dot com" I love his videos and contributions.

I'm actually running on a drilled stock air filter right now. I emailed UNI and told them that my filter was damaged. And they agreed to replace it. LOL awesome. I told them I wanted a 1 1/2" filter though, not the rip-able 1 1/4"

Re: Uni Air Filter doesn't fit on Tomos a55 carb

Pretty pictures. I run very good with it, neither rich nor lean.

A drilled stock A55 airbox offers some boost but is about 1 mph less then the red UNI Pod filter... however, even a drilled airbox is still WAY more quiet then an UNI Pod...

Drill fourteen 1/4" holes near the back and bottom of your stock A55 airbox... enough gh to improve performance without blowing away your eardrums.

I've been using this setup for about 2 years. No complaints from the cops.
