Best Carb and Intake for a Metrakit

I currently have a 15mm Bing and a 15mm intake on my 65cc Metra kit. To be honest, I am not all that impressed. Granted I haven't port matched yet and the 15mm is on the low end of the carbs recommended. But what are other people doing?

Re: Best Carb and Intake for a Metrakit

What kind of pipe do you have on it?

Re: Best Carb and Intake for a Metrakit

I have a Bi-turbo.

Re: Best Carb and Intake for a Metrakit

well i have a 14 bing and a 14 intake, and it hauls. but i'm going to try this 19mm phbg business out . . . just got one . . . to see if maybe i can get some more top speed.

describe what you mean by "not impressed." are you hitting 40?

Re: Best Carb and Intake for a Metrakit

biturbo is not great on lowend ,get an estoril or DMP or a circuit pipe and port match ,its easy.

Re: Best Carb and Intake for a Metrakit

16 x 45 gearing and I get 35mph. My stock cylinder and head with the same setup gave me 30-35. I do notice that I have a little more torque for the hills, but I guess I expected more. Port matching seems like my first step? Would a different carb or pipe help with out the matching?

Aaron McTaggart /

puch exhaust header+19mm PHBG=the sex.

Re: Best Carb and Intake for a Metrakit

I have a 15 Bing and mine hauls too. I'm running the Bullet and High Compression Head. The Bing should do better than that.

Re: Best Carb and Intake for a Metrakit

dude, you should be getting a lot more than that. mine cruises at 40, and will top 40 by a few miles if pushed - and i have stock gearing. it's also got a LOT better low-end.

check for air-leaks. bings are clamp-on - is your clamp tight enough? are your head bolts torqued down? also, try taking a head gasket out, to boost your compression a touch.

Re: Best Carb and Intake for a Metrakit

I have the 50cc high compression head with no head gasket. I had to use a bunch of base gaskets to get the piston to clear, but I am getting 160 psi compression, which seems good. I have a high flow filter and am using an 86 jet which seems to be perfect as the 88 4-stroked and the 82 would die out at full throttle. The 84 seemed ok too, but the kit only has 150 miles on it so I am going to run the 86 for awhile longer. I'll check that the clamp is on tight. Also, I weigh 240 pounds, but the stock cylinder (which had 200 psi, so it seems like the metra should be higher? yes no?) ran me around almost as well as the kit. Any other ideas?

Re: Best Carb and Intake for a Metrakit

well i weigh 225, use the stock airbox, and a 78 jet on my 14mm carb. i have the 60cc hi comp head with no head gasket and one base gasket. never measured my compression, but i think 160 is average, not great. maybe try taking off just one of the gaskets? or take off one base, add one head?

Re: Best Carb and Intake for a Metrakit

I had the paper and the aluminum that came with the kit and added 2 more paper to start with. I took off one of the paper ones and it seems to still be clearing. My pressure gage developed an air leak, so I have no idea what compression I have now. It seems to not rev very high. I have a tiny tach and am planning on seing just how fast it goes later today. What would limit the revs? More repms = higher top speed which I think is why I am a good 5 -10 mph below this kits potential. I am kinda frustrated since I have heard so many good things about the metra kit, but I haven't seen any real performance gains. Thoughts?

Re: Best Carb and Intake for a Metrakit

Modman what jet are you using in your 15 bing 15 intqke setup

Re: Best Carb and Intake for a Metrakit

the 65 metrakit kicks ass mine with a 15 bing/82 jet and tecnoboss exhaust, stock gearing, port match, hauls ass... same setup on my other bike - bing+ 19 dellorto+my fatass = "beastlike" acceleration and top speed

(Quote by treats, the man does not lie)

Re: Best Carb and Intake for a Metrakit

I have a bullet pipe, port matched metra, 15 bing 15 intake. stock gearing. 82 jet, high flow fiiter, im only hitting 38. seems to loose power at the very top end.

Re: Best Carb and Intake for a Metrakit

well it's really not supposed to rev high though . . . it's a metrakit: cast iron, no reeds. the most they're supposed to rev at top speed is like 8500, 9000 rpm . . . but that should have you breaking 40 with 16x45 gearing.

i think you should be looking into things like the condition of your points, your timing, your compression, and your carburetion. something in that secondary-level mix is holding you back.

Re: Best Carb and Intake for a Metrakit

actually i think im at 14x45

Re: Best Carb and Intake for a Metrakit

Could be the port match then huh? I haven't done that yet.

Re: Best Carb and Intake for a Metrakit

neither have i

Re: Best Carb and Intake for a Metrakit

But my old cylinder was fine with the timing, points, compression etc. Should I have changed the timing with the metrakit?

Re: Best Carb and Intake for a Metrakit

i'm not sure - it depends on where your timing is right now, lol. i'm just saying, it sounds like your set up is good, so you should look into tuning your timing and carburetion to get those last 5mph. my timing is slightly advanced, though, which i think is correct - like, a touch less than 2mm before TDC.
