Vespa Grande tuning

Ok so here's the deal, I haven't put any of it on so far but here's what I have:

64 cc 10-pin DR Kit

Malossi variator

13.13 carb

top racing crank shaft 10-pin

all the needed bearings and seals

Here's my question:

What is the best exhaust

What are the best tires (mine are dry rotted so bad you can see the threads :/)

It's going to have tons of torque so I need good tires and I'm looking for more of a top end pipe. I would also like to keep my pedals and stand though I could deal with a side stand.

So, any experts? What's worked for you so far?

Anything else I need?

Re: Vespa Grande tuning

woops I also have a high flow air filter and will get the proper jets when I start tuning though I would like advice as to what size.

Re: Vespa Grande tuning

i like my simonini circuit pipe. and sava has good tires.

Re: Vespa Grande tuning

Simonini circuit and Pirelli tires. Savas are ok but dont last as long, Pirellis will probly outlast your kit. Jet range will likely be at least high 70s, though it varies from ped to ped.

Re: Vespa Grande tuning

ok thanks guys. the originals are pirelli but they're 30+ years old.

Does the simonini circuit pipe require loss of pedals and/ stand?

Re: Vespa Grande tuning

has anyone tried to mess with the gearing?

Re: Vespa Grande tuning

there is a malossi racing gearset and a few different variators.

Re: Vespa Grande tuning

and the simonini circuit keeps stand and pedals

Re: Vespa Grande tuning

If the Pirellis are cracking and dry rotted, replace them, otherwise just leave them...I still run my 30yr old Pirelli's, and they work great.

Install the 13.13 and filter and pipe first, get it working right, then install the kit, crank, get it broken in and going right, and then variator.

And lemme know if you want to sell your stock crank (what pin size is the stock?).

Re: Vespa Grande tuning

I've had shitty performance from my circuit pipe...is it more of a high rpm pipe? For a Grande look into the leovince. I saw it put on a Grande and it felt like a kitted bike; a great pipe. We tried out the circuit pipe in comparison and it just plane sucked. Anyone got any other pipe recommends?

The BEST pipe that is available and already in the US is the crazy Simonini handmade amazingness that Benji sells. Shit will blow your mind.

Re: Vespa Grande tuning

I have basicly the same setup on my Grande at the moment plus the taller malossi gears. When you crack the case to install your crank and kit, don't forget to drill out the air intake to 1/2 inch. (Close enough to 13mm) The instructions are in the wiki. The #66 jet that comes with the 13mm carb is just about perfect for me but I'm also at 5500 ft in the desert.

As far as the taller gears go, they take away a bit of the low end but add quite a bit to the cruising speed. If you are thinking that you want to get gears at some point, make sure you get an exhaust that works with pedals. The tall gears make it virtually impossible to kick start your ped. I can do it occasionally if my motor is still warm but I don't usually bother trying much anymore. I just pedal it on the stand for starts. That's why we have pedals right?

Re: Vespa Grande tuning

Kick start your Grande?

Re: Vespa Grande tuning

You know, with the bike on the kick stand you put the pedal near the top of it's rotation and kick it down to turn the motor over and start it. Like kick starting it with the pedal. It works great on a 1 speed vespa and I used to be able to do it fairly easily with the regular grande gears. Now it just doesn't really work. If I got an exhaust that interfered with my pedals, I'd have to push start it and I'm just too lazy to run with a moped. Got it?

Re: Vespa Grande tuning

brennan, have you compared that handmade simonini to the handmade leovince?

Re: Vespa Grande tuning

Oh yeah...I was wondering if someone had come up with some crazy kick starter. I start my Ciao that way. Grande not so much.

Re: Vespa Grande tuning

Negative. I have not. The only thing I know about the Leo is that it is supposed to be awesome for stock cylinders.

Re: Vespa Grande tuning

Go check out vespa-ciao.nl. Those dudes have Malossi cases that actually kick start. They are super sick! Too rich for my blood though.

Re: Vespa Grande tuning

so you run the handmade simo on your kitted cylinder? Do you know how it runs on stock?

Re: Vespa Grande tuning

My blood too, no doubt. I can, however, vouch for the awesomeness of the Leo HM for stock cylinders. I have one on my Grande with a RedFilter, 13.13, 12.5mm intake, and Multivar, and it rips...I'm hitting around 45, as verified by a pace bike.

Re: Vespa Grande tuning

Not on my bike, but on a bike I was just working on. I'm sure it would totally suck on a stock cylinder. This one was on a Malossi kit. Really, everything that I've heard says that the proma circuit(chopped up and welded to fit grande) and the Leo Pipe are the only ones that are worth buying for stock cylinders.

Re: Vespa Grande tuning

thanks. looking forward to seeing some performance finally.

Re: Vespa Grande tuning

don't bother with higher jets. I went from 80 and down to 72 and am going lower tomorrow.

I have 13.13 carb, simonini circuit exhaust, DR 65 cc kit, milled head, almost matched ports only went about half way cuz my bit and file gave up on me. I will be dropping down prob to the 68 and than see where im at

Also look into a cold plug. I am getting misfiring at highrpm and low mids for a split second. Pinging is not coo.

I think i will be getting a crank with my stimulus plan :)

Re: Vespa Grande tuning

bump

Re: Vespa Grande tuning

go to treats and either get the simonini circuit or the promopeder one, both of those will be fine

other than that all your questions have been answered your jettingw ill be anywhere from 64-72
