Dellorto choke needs modifying?

So I have a Grande with a 13.13, redfilter, 12.5mm intake, and Leo Vinci HM. Plug chops have looked good for months, so mixture is right. The thing is, when I start it, I typically engage the choke, start it, and itll run a couple seconds and die. Then I start it normally and everything is fine. If I start it without choke, it takes a while, as you would expect.

So here's my thinking: with the higher airflow due to the various upgrade parts, do I need to grind the choke lever slightly to allow a tad more air while the choke is on? Has anyone done this or experienced the same thing?

Or you could just leave the choke open a little and see what it does, and not ruin the carb.

Upjet wouldnt make sense, Im trying to get it a tad leaner on choke, I think. Eric, you obviously don't own a dellorto SHA, which does not have a cable-type choke that simply dumps in more fuel when engaged, but a slide choke that richens the mixture by restricting the airflow into the carburetor. You can't leave it partway open; it's either on or it isnt.

On my 16.16 sha It would fire right up but die if I didnt take off the choke right away. So I would start it, as soon as it starts I would rev the throttle wide open a couple times to release the choke and warm up the cylinder a bit. (Dont rev it as high as it will go just enough to undo the choke and then once more for good mesure.) After that mine would run perfectly. You could try grinding just a touch off of the choke but if you take too much off your choke may not work correctly. good luck

I have a spare shorty choke lever that I might try it with and see if it works. Ill let you know.

If the carb is a SHA model carb the choke plate has a hole in the center of it.

You could just drill the hole out a little larger. But I agree with

hotrodtodd that all you have to do blip the throttle to release the choke after you get the engine started.

ours does that too, its pretty normal for it to not run on choke except a few seconds at startup. even more so in warm weather when you're jetted perfect. heck, some of the time we dont even need to choke. we just start it, let it die, start it, give it a tiny bit of throttle, then let it idle till warm and take off.

Yeah Jordan, thats pretty much my protocol. My Ciao still works normally with very light tuning, but I suspect the extra stuff on the Grande is trying to pull too much more than the choked carb can supply, and making it too rich. I will report back when I get a chance to experiment with that shorty choke lever. Probly a day or three.
