Fatter rear wheel?

Finally getting around to resto-modding my maxi, after YEARS of distractions I can finally have a fun summer of 'ped cruising (I hope). I'm replacing the rear swing arm with a aftermarket chrome unit. It's mostly a looks thing, But I couldn't help but notice it'll fit a wider rear tire(so says the product write-up). Since I'm rebuilding the brakes, painting the hubs, hoops, etc and having the wheels relaced with pretty chrome spokes. (source for the correct size spoke anyone?) It would make sense to go wide while I'm playing around. Is it possible to lace a 3", even 3.5" wide hoop to a stock maxi rear hub? Spoked wheels and I don't get along, so this is something I'd just have a 'cycle shop mess with.

Re: Fatter rear wheel?

You could spoke up a car wheel if it had enough holes in it.

Re: Fatter rear wheel?

I'm rebuilding my chopped ped with (2) KX80 front wheel alloy rims . The front rim is 17"

Re: Fatter rear wheel?

Coincidence... I was looking at KX80 rims on ebay and thinking they might do the trick. Let me know if that works out for you. Was also thinking maybe I could get a kx80 front disc brake setup to fit on the Maxi. Wonder what that would involve?

Re: Fatter rear wheel?

I'm using the KX front fork tubes and a General 5-Star tree with disk and a front wheel for the rear with a sprotor sprocket/brake setup . Basically a semi-solid rear sprocket with a 125 front brake caliper on the sprocket instead of a disk. The 125 grabs the sprocket towards the hub and doesn't touch the greasy teeth .Custom choppers been doing it for years , Oh and my brakes will have a cable to the hidden master cylinders for full hydraulics without the master cylinders on the bars (F/R) Go late 90's KX,YZ,CR 80's they all use the disk and a 17'' rim .

Re: Fatter rear wheel?

Honda cr-80, Kawasaki kx 80, Yamaha yz 80, right? I'm not into anything asian built, so I'm no expert. If it's got 2 wheels and a motor, it better be built in europe or I'm not interested (unless I'm robbing parts off of it to trick out a 'ped) :)

Re: Fatter rear wheel?

Yep !

Re: Fatter rear wheel?

Well, this ought to be easier. When you talked of a sproter setup, you said 125 caliper. Is that 125 as in for a .125" (1/8) rotor, or 125 as in off a 125cc bike, like an enduro or such?

Ben Van Zoest /

The chrome swing arm you are right mainly for looks is actually very weak and tends twist. The Puch design

limits tire wid therefore I have seen on a dutch performance site the Honda swing arm adaption. I try to find it been a long time.

Re: Fatter rear wheel?

125cc dirtbike . The oversized caliper allows the pads to grab the inside surface of the rear sprocket missing the teeth where it's greasey.

Re: Fatter rear wheel?

When using the term weak, are we talking street riding or off-road i.e. on a magnum? Seems like you don't need too much strength on road, even with a kitted out motor pushing, say, 4 horsepower maybe?

Re: Fatter rear wheel?

Just remember, your wheel is going to be that much heavier and slow you down......

Re: Fatter rear wheel?

Of course there's some weight considerations from a wider wheel, but it's not that big of a deal for me. If I end up with a 70cc motor, pipe, carb, sprockets and so forth that'll give me good acceleration and a top end of 40mph I'd still be happy, as long as I can also fit a set of smooth sexy looking Bridgestone Spitfire tires on it and get rid of the skinny-ass Huffy look!!!!
