why does 2 shoe clutch have a key?

why does the three shoe not have a wooduff key and the 2 shoe puch cluch has one?

Re: why does 2 shoe clutch have a key?

because aftermarket companies want to give you a part that cost them the least amount and charge you the most they can. Key slot=extra machining and tooling and labor cost. You could probably take it to a machine shop and have them put a slot in it.

Re: why does 2 shoe clutch have a key?

well even the original 3 shoe has no key cut in the crank or the clutch

Re: why does 2 shoe clutch have a key?

really? hmmm......what year did they start putting 3 shoes in from the factory. They might have done the same thing as aftermarket companies. They found out that they were wasting $.01 on each engine by putting keys on the clutch. idk

You don't need a key. You really don't even need one for your flywheel, the taper will hold it on just fine. Keys just make it easier to keep the flywheel in the right place while you are tightening the nut down.

Re: why does 2 shoe clutch have a key?

correct ^^^^^, mobys have no keys at all for either side, setting the timing must be done manually without the aid of a key on the magneto, both the clutch and magneto stay on fine w/o them.

Re: why does 2 shoe clutch have a key?

Incorrect!!!

Every single moby and peugeot I've owned had massive timing issues because the cam would always slip, because they weren't keyed. Woodruff keys are a good idea.

But you're right, you don't need one on puch clutches, because it doesn't matter if it slips a little.

Just my opinion, whatevs.

Re: why does 2 shoe clutch have a key?

Wrong!

Your not tightening your shit good enough, that's why you have timing issues. Yeah, if you pull your cam on and off x 1000 you'll have cam slip problems, but once a new crank goes on and you get it set right, slipping virtually disappears.

Re: why does 2 shoe clutch have a key?

Throw some loctite on the crankshaft taper if you're having problems with slipping.

Re: why does 2 shoe clutch have a key?

puch clutches and magnetos are on relatively loose compared to mobys, u guys use spanners not piston stops so its alot harder to get them as tight.

woodrift keys only help alignment and slippage during tightening down of magnetos they play no role in holding it in place once its tighten adequately. most ppl who have issues with slipping don't tighten enough or use the correct methods/tools.

Re: why does 2 shoe clutch have a key?

Put a ding in the shaft with a punch before putting the clutch or the mag on and it wont move on you after tightening the nut
