theory: exhaust valve?

is there a way to make the exhaust reed valve operated? i have no idea here, im just throwing out ideas to learn more about the subject and maybe spark some ingenuity.

thanks!

Re: theory: exhaust valve?

You could create a cable operated exhaust "power valve" but anything not made of a sturdy fucking material will be destroyed by 800-1000 degree temeratures.

Go read about the Honda Dio.

Yamaha YPVS is pretty fascinating too.

Re: theory: exhaust valve?

To get a gain from an expansion chamber they rely on being able to cram the lost charge back into the cylinder.

Re: theory: exhaust valve?

As far as I remember some large bikes like Harleys are known to use a butterfly valve on the exhaust. Im not sure if its for the sound or it has any performance gains but for some reason I see the picture in my head. Not sure on this one so....

Re: theory: exhaust valve?

a power valve could def be made for a moped if you have the right stuff.and i haven't heard of any power valves that use butterfly valves. amybe on a harley but thats 4 stroke. this is a very good idea. i might try to come up with a valve for my tomos.

Re: theory: exhaust valve?

wait, the exhaust valve would close on the upstroke, after the piston cleared the port right? so would it do any good? the piston closes the port once it passes it anyway.

Re: theory: exhaust valve?

no a exhaust valve or power valve which is what its called on a 2 stroke doesn't fully close. it stays closed at lower rpms to increase low end power. at mid rpms the valve opens which opens the port fully for high end power.

Re: theory: exhaust valve?

consumer sportbikes have had them for about 18 years now, very cool!!!

my brother in law did a thesis on their design/operation he had me proofread it, it is such a simple idea... along the lines of Taurus SHO Yamaha engine intake, but of course on the exhaust side of the bikes..you get the best of both, low and top end

Re: theory: exhaust valve?

u can install a performace aftermarket powervalve kit on lambretta scooters whoa thats the shit, i'd look into that for ideas on moped applications

Re: theory: exhaust valve?

Sounds slightly like how a ball joint on a motobecane exhaust works.
