Gilardoni build questions

Cupermatt o /

So im getting close to finally putting my motor togethter and ive come up with a couple questions i cant find the answers to.

1. Exactly how far in does the case need to be ground out to clear the piston skirt? i know the nubs need to be ground down but what about the rest of the case(from the bottom of the cylinder to the crank)?

2. Does the stock petcock flow well enough to feed the gilardoni through a 24mm mikuni?

3. On the magneto side of my top racing crank the bearing seems to sit croked by .002" when flat up against the crank (was pounded only on the inner part of the race). Does this not seem right? Or am I just being overly cautious.

Ive tried searching and cant seem to find this info so if anyone out there can help out Id really appreciate it. The pic is of the bike this motor will be going on.

thats gonna be a sweet magnum, dude.

Re: Gilardoni build questions

you 'pounded on' the bearings?

Re: Gilardoni build questions

i nearly always pound on the bearing. puch makes a special tool used to tap on the inner race.

Re: Gilardoni build questions

also, how did you even measure a .002 tolerance flaw?

Re: Gilardoni build questions

Cupermatt o /

didnt really pound the bearing on,more like tapped it on :)

I measured the clearance with a feeler gauge. .034” vs .032”

Re: Gilardoni build questions

i had to grind out my case quite a bit, not as bad ass the metra tho..

one thing you need to make sure you grind down enough are the edges in the corners of the case back by the crank. (sorry, thats the only way to describe it). you need to watch for the skirt of the piston hitting that.

beside that, the only concern i had was the crank arm rubbing the case, so i ground that down a bit also.

ohh.. and next time, put your crank in the freezer and your bearings in the oven for a couple of minutes, they'll slide right on.

Re: Gilardoni build questions

i use an upside down dust off can to freeze the crank and a propane torch to heat the bearings

Re: Gilardoni build questions

that works too

dude, please take some more photos of this build when you start doing your case grinding and stuff.

Re: Gilardoni build questions

yeah, on most puchs just a propane torch to the bearing untill it turns straw colored, will do the trick.

blue means ya fucked up

thanx for the feedback guys. Know exactly the corners youre talking about aaronb. Do you know if there is any purpose to them? Or can they just be ground off completely. As for the build ill be taking pics all along the way and post it once the bikes up and running.

One more question. Does anyone know the thread size of a magnum petcock?

Re: Gilardoni build questions

mm.. not sure exact reason for the corners.. but i do know that you shouldn't be excessive in your grinding. you can loose a bit of compression the more you grind out.

what are you putting this kit on? what pipe are you thinking of using?

i'm putting it on a newport, hopefully with a homoet 8p

good luck

Its goin on a magnum(E50). Theres a photo in my first post. Ill prolbably end up with a simonini though I may mod it a bit. Good luck finding an 8p :P

Re: Gilardoni build questions

aaron, i may sell my 8p (not sure yet i may use it on a 80cc metra), but if your gonna put this on a gilardoni i suggest making a new header for it...only because i think the gilardoni requires a pipe that has a bigger header like the simonini does... so if your gonna do this to an 8p, which is the same as the 6p but made for the angled exhaust port, i would just buy a 6p which is easier to find. and make a new header for that. plus you get a brand new pipe. mine is used and need some cleaning up. or get a simonini also. look in my profile that's the pipe i may sell. the bike currently has a simonini on it and it has huge performance difference over the 8p. also way louder than the 8p.

Yeah matt, what size jets did you order for you're mikuni and where did you pick up that intake? My gila is coming this week and i want to be prepared. Also your bike looks more OG with the hero tank.

Matt's running the jet that came in the Mikuni. I think its a 130. A chop today revealed its running a bit rich which is no surprise on 25:1 and easy throttle. He made the intake, not sure where he got the tubing, but I do know its JB-welded on.

Pretty much any minarelli scooter intake will work though if you can't fab something yourself.

Other than that, the bike rips. Pretty crazy stuff happening. Cupertino mopeds are getting faster...

how do you like your wheel setup? looks rad, wonder how the weight feels though

Re: Gilardoni build questions

Cupermatt o /

hey taylor, the wheels work out great. The bike is kinda heavy but feels really stable and its got grip forever. Cant wait to get some sportier tires on it.

As for the intake all i did was cut a big hole in the intake that came with the kit, then took a flanged drain pipe and stuck it through the hole. Its sealed up with jb-weld and so far its air tight. I have pics of how i built it i can post up if you need em. The Jet is a 130, it came with the carb. I think the right jet for this setup is gona be in the 120-130 range if that helps

Some pics of that intake would be sweet. I'm going to be running basically the same setup on a pinto, but i still need to figure out what forks/rims I'm going to use. I might go with a super tecno over the simo, but still haven't decided. I dunno, I have a lot of decisions to make.

No tom, you are going to use the simo. Tecno, ha!

anyone got tips on jetting a dellorto?

im starting with a 19mm at the moment.

I just need to get a range of jets to buy

update

intake 1

intake 2

intake 3

case 1 before finishing it. I actually went a little bit farther into the case on the bottom for piece of mind

case 2: you can see how close the piston skirt comes to the case here, thats why i decided to grind it out some more

oops forgot to resize ahaha

wow......just wow.

Re: Gilardoni build questions
