Puch 3 shoe tuning ?'s

Well, I ordered a 3 shoe from benji, and have been reading up on tuning them, and one thought that I came up with was has anyone tried setting it so that one shoe engaged and then the other and then the last one, each at a slightly differnet RPM. In my mind that would be good, cuz instead of the engine bogging down when the clutch (all shoes) engage at the same time, it would slowly engage, allow RPM's to stay up and thus maintaining power. Anyone played with this idea?

Thanks

I doubt that will work, because one shoe isn't going to apply enough pressure, its just going to slip until all 3 are engaged.

If you want to do it right, get some springs from Paz, they are super sweet and make the clutch slip nicely until fully engaging (at a much higher RPM). Keep in mind the springs that come in those 3 shoes are actually weaker than those in your two shoe, so there isn't a whole lot of tuning you can do.

Re: Puch 3 shoe tuning ?'s

Yeah I've got some Paz springs, but I was just curious if anyone had tried my idea. Now that you put it that way, it does seem that it wouldn't work.

Re: Puch 3 shoe tuning ?'s

Wont work.

I cant tell you from experience of not having it tuned right that all it will do is destroy your pads quicker. If anything its less effectful when they all finally do grab.

Yea dude, if you have the springs, you are set. Get it one there and rip!

Re: Puch 3 shoe tuning ?'s

not to mention that an un balanced clutch is prone to detonate.

Re: Puch 3 shoe tuning ?'s

that's exactly how i got my clutch tuned right now...and yes each one does come in at different rpms....i'm gonna have to disagree with you all. imo it's a little better than all three shoes grabbing at once.

Re: Puch 3 shoe tuning ?'s

When your clutch is not balanced you're basicly destroying the following items in a fast and effective way:

Clutch shoes

Clutch bell

Clutch baseplate

Crank

Crank seals

Crank bearing

What you're doing is that you create an unbalance. That unbalance isn't that bad at 500 RPM, but when something is spinning around at 8000 or more times a minute, it really wants to go out. In other words, your clutch is pulling VERY hard on one side of your clutch bell, baseplate and crank. This can also literally destroy your crank, bearings and seals.

Not to mention that more slip = more lost power. You don't want to lose power, you want it on the road. If your engine drops in RPM when the clutch grabs, you have not set up the clutch good for that engine. It's either set too heavy (Engine not powerful enough to pull trough) or set too light (Engine already over peak power, but it's probably the first).

You better set up that clutch nicely, or you'll be crying later.

Re: Puch 3 shoe tuning ?'s

yeah i do understand the drawbacks of an unbalanced clutch and how it can hurt the clutch, bell and crank. i'm not to worried about that (i have extra's)....but i run this way cause after tuning many different clutches this way seems to give me a better bottom and mid range especially with an 18/40 gearing...with the balanced clutch no matter how much i tune it, it would either rev too much or some reason doesn't have a good bottom... if i run a balanced clutch, i may have too cut grooves in the clutch pads(which would make it grab more, right?) and tighten the springs a little more...the springs i have is the heavy duty (red) springs on a gilardoni set up.

Re: Puch 3 shoe tuning ?'s

also i may try different weight clutch shoes...i guess i'm like a perfectionist when it comes to this sort of stuff...it just has too feel right. i have another bike that has a parmakit setup with a balanced clutch and i like the way that one feels

thanks raold i appreciate the advice, i know you folks up in the netherlands have some crazy puchs'.

Re: Puch 3 shoe tuning ?'s

You're welcome ;)

You might want to cut a diagonal groove in the lining to help oil distribution and grab. Also, when you lighten the clutch, it helps to make it grab more smoothly with less RPM drop. The Gilardoni should be able to pull through easily.

This is a video of a puch with a nicely tuned clutch.

Re: Puch 3 shoe tuning ?'s

whats up with the horrible techno music in that clip?

Re: Puch 3 shoe tuning ?'s

welcome to europe... ;)

Re: Puch 3 shoe tuning ?'s

Tim said it... That's what's considered "music" over here... I personally hate it, but I've no control over the mindless hordes that keep buying that stuff into the top lists

Re: Puch 3 shoe tuning ?'s

how can you tell from that video that the clutch is well tuned?

Re: Puch 3 shoe tuning ?'s

I liked the music in a weird way. I knew a whole bunch of raver kids before I got rescued by the bikers and the hippies and the hippy bikers. They could get any contraband substance known to man on a moments notice. I still know some of them, who am I kidding hehe
