Higher top speed on my PA50

Hi all,

I have a 78' PA50II, largely unmodified. I'm fairly big (6'1" and 175lb), and, at best, I can go 30mph.

I'd really like to be able to hit 35-40 mph, without kitting the bike. I've heard that kits just aren't reliable, and I ride quite frequently. Does anyone know how I should proceed here? I know the exhaust is a huge restriction, but Proma circuits are out of the picture, as are the yasuni pipes (too much money). I was thinking of modifying a pocketbike pipe, but I'm not sure if that is a good way to spend ~$50.

Anyone with more experience in this sort of thing want to give me some pointers?

Re: Higher top speed on my PA50

You won't get a good pipe for $50.

$50 isn't much at all.

You can't buy anything NEW for that amount.

Maybe you can find somebody with a BiTurbo exhaust that is used/dented etc (a new BiTurbo is close to $100 with shipping). Then you could graft it onto your muffler headpipe (cutting and welding required), and find a way to support it off the back frame. Also, you'd need larger jets, available at your local Honda dealer.

I doubt that the pipe alone would get you to 40, but mid 30's, I suppose.

I think someone on here modified a pocketbike pipe for his sons pa50I. It got it from 20-30mph, as well as with new reeds.

so you might get 35 out of it, but 40 i doubt.

oh and it was like 20 bucks

Re: Higher top speed on my PA50

I had a 70cc Metrakit on mine and it was very reliable. But your not gonna get far with $50.

That was me. I had also ported his cylinder. Top speed - about 35 MPH, but the bottom-end suffered too much. A BiTurbo should be better than the $20 pocketbike ebay exhaust.

Re: Higher top speed on my PA50

But,

does anyone actually make a bi-turbo that is a direct fit or do you have to fabricate it to fit ?

Thanks,

Raz

Nope.

If you're limited to "bolt-ons", then you are OUT OF LUCK.

The only option is you can find an old, used Proma pipe. It you find one for $50, then the seller didn't know what it was worth. I've seen used Promas go for over $100.

Re: Higher top speed on my PA50

I would gladly pay 100.00 for a proma...anyone?

Re: Higher top speed on my PA50

30 aint bad man. You could start with the basics at first. apparently you can get jets thru a local honda dealer... pretty sweet. Try jerry rigging up a better airbox (the one on there is pretty restrictive if i remember) and upjetting. It wont make a huge difference, but its always a good place to start, and pretty cheap. especially since there isnt a lot of hobbit stuff kickin around... except for that 70cc kit at treats right now. Buy that .

Re: Higher top speed on my PA50

You can buy a new Proma Circuit pipe for the Honda Hobbit for about 190 CHF (about $180) shipped to the USA at http://www.scootertuning.ch. I'm waiting for mine right now

Re: Higher top speed on my PA50

Thanks for all the replies. I didn't mean to imply that I was only putting $50 into this bike. I was just thinking that those fifty dollars might be better spent on a decent exhaust, bigger carb, or something else all together.

I'll see what I can do with the airbox. I need to take the carb off for spring cleaning anyways. With upjetting, I shouldn't be doing that without a larger exhaust, right? I'm fairly unfamiliar with the whole upjetting thing. I guess I'll look some old posts and try and get a handle on it.

Looks like I'm going to be getting a proma and upjetting. I'm hesitant to kit the thing, because I don't want to decrease the reliability, and I want to stay relatively legal. Thanks for all the info, especially the line on the proma pipe.

Re: Higher top speed on my PA50

You need to upjet if you make your airbox less restrictive. Basically what jetting does is regulate the amount of fuel that mixes with the air coming in. If you modify your air filter to let more air in, but don't change the jet, then you're going to run lean, and that's bad. Upjetting and downjetting are just changing the amount of fuel that mixes with the air that's coming in. A performance pipe will help pull more of everything through your engine. If you haven't upjetted, it'll just be pulling more air mixed with the same amount of fuel, making you run lean.

Re: Higher top speed on my PA50

The proma circuit pipe alone will give you 35-38mph speeds.

If you can't find one you will have to try to fit something else like rarexro suggests.

The airbox on a Hobbit is a convoluted mess. Other than removing it all together (a bad idea) do the pipe thing first.

dude, 2 piece bi-turbo then go to a muffler shop and they will probly weld it on for you

Re: Higher top speed on my PA50

try to buy an extra PA50 muffler and weld the new exhaust to the original mount if you can, then bolt it on.

i just remembered i still have whats left of my old express exhaust. might come in handy...

Re: Higher top speed on my PA50

Someone mentioned a leovinci pipe here:

I don't know anything about it, but it might be worth at least making a phone call

Re: Higher top speed on my PA50

lol, and i'm STILL too broke to afford it, haw haw :D

Re: Higher top speed on my PA50

I'm skeptical.

I'd love to see a pic of said Leo pipe...

Where is it on the site?

All I see is scooter crap...

Re: Higher top speed on my PA50

Yeah the lady I was talking to over hotmail said they lumped the PA50 parts in with other scooter brands or something to that effect because most of the world considers it a scooter and not a moped.

Re: Higher top speed on my PA50

vhdparts.nl has the proma camino/hobbit exhaust in stock for 50 euro (about $80).. im probably going to order two, but holding off til i get a lil money together as, with shipping and bank transfer costs, its gonna be around $200 all told.

Re: Higher top speed on my PA50

I was checking that site out, and they have the performance crank as well, has anybody on this site ordered from them before?

Re: Higher top speed on my PA50

oh also i called leovince about that pipe.. all they seemed to know about it is that its an OEM replacement style, no performance boost whatsoever. also used on honda wallaroo or somesuch, i think.

Re: Higher top speed on my PA50

BX

Let us know how this deal with vhdparts.nl goes.

I think there are a bunch of us itching for a new supplier.

Leovince pipe remains available. See Leovince e-mail below:

OK Rex,

I was able to find a drawing of the 4522 system. It was showing up as new, but of course has been around for awhile. This pipe is still available but would need to be ordered from Italy. Retail is $109. if you would like to order one, give our sales guys a call at 510-232-4040.

Re: Higher top speed on my PA50

i just cut mine off and put that tube that comes with the 70cc metra kit on it with a uni airfilter and it works great.
