preparing a za50 for kit

Ok so im going to go big and throw a gilardoni kit onto my za50 magnum for ultimate power. Just curious how I should prep it.

Its a newer, low mileage black tranny cover roller bearing crank, so Im confident it will hold up for a little while without tweaking the clutches and what not. Also yes im quite well aware of the fact i need to grind the case and the tight tolerances in the transmission.

I guess really my only question is should i change my gearing? I really dont want to just rip through my first gear clutch due to all the torque and have to replace it soon on down the line.

Re: preparing a za50 for kit

aside from radiusing the case, make sure you take care of the little tabs in there that will destrroy your piston

Re: preparing a za50 for kit

Pretty much the only option to change your gearing is to go get a 36 rear sprocket. A 20 tooth front will fit with a little grinding and a 32 is about as low as you can go in the rear. Neither of those were actually made though so custom sprockets is the only way.

To do the porting and to open motor to accept the larger cylinder jug "the right way" requires you to split the cases and remove all the transmission parts. You need to remove a lot of material from the case, not only the ports and the diameter of the opening but also some parts in the very back of the case. The skirt of the piston dose not clear the small bumps in the very back of the port area due to it's larger diameter.

I am in the process of building a Metra80 2 speed and just put it all back together last night. With the correct tools it is a simple job. Two other people in SF are able to split the cases and remove the transmission with pneumatic impact guns.

Wail you are in the case make sure you open up the Main shaft and examine the dampeners, these can degrade over time and be quickly destroyed by a kitted bike. Your bike should have the newer black dampeners and are probably in good condition.

Well I would really like to do this the correct way.

Maybe I could buy some shop time with you or one of the other guys (I might know them, but probably not)? Its going to be a little ways off before i get it completely set up (im getting the kit soon, and carb and pipe are a bit of a ways off)

Re: preparing a za50 for kit

LOL didn't realize who was asking the question (kid of just started rambling off information). I'm sure one of us will have some free time. I'm just getting back into 2 speeds and have a lot to learn, either Jimmy or G would be the guys if they had free time. If neither of them are free I think I will have time after the late bird rally.

Should have a little bigger better set-up space to work by them too.
