how bad is this much play? (video)

so i lightened the main gear on this e50. took out 3 spokes with an angle grinder. i must have knicked the gear shaft while doing it though cause the sprocket has play now. this is going to be a kitted bike so im worried about stripping the gear shaft.

do i need to replace the main gear?

you think this is something that could be fixed with a little gentle welding?

i really dont want to have to crack this case again and modify a main gear again if i dont need to.

p.s. i dont want to weld the sprocket on if i dont have to. i would like to be able to play with the gearing.

Re: how bad is this much play? (video)

no vid?

Re: how bad is this much play? (video)

oops lol.

Re: how bad is this much play? (video)

shitty cell phone vid, but im loving youtubes service that uploads vids right from your phone.

if i ever see a ufo im doing it.

Re: how bad is this much play? (video)

lol

Re: how bad is this much play? (video)

That is a lot of play. How about, take the sprocket off , give it a couple spot welds, grind/file down , to take up some of the slop? Just a suggestion. Brent

Re: how bad is this much play? (video)

yeah thats what i was thinking but im not a trained welder by any means. just bought one and learned by fucking shit up.

i have a little 200$ wire fed one. i just kinda put some "dollops" on and then grind them down with a file? will that hold under stress?

Re: how bad is this much play? (video)

I have no idea Harold? I was tryn' to think of something other then replacing it. It is worth a try. I am sure you have a spare sprocket you could try it out on. Worse comes to worse, replace. Good Luck Brent

Re: how bad is this much play? (video)

Harold, I don't think the play is from the gearshaft, I think it's from the sprocket. I just did a rebuild and when I put the aftermarket sprocket back on, it had about 3 times the play that your video showed! It was a pretty new srocket, but then I took a Puch original off another E-50 and it was nice and tight - no play at all. I think these aftermarket sprockets are made from shitty steel - you hold it next to the Puch original and you can just feel the difference in quality.

In your video it doesn't look like the shaft is moving at all, just the sprocket going back and forth.

Re: how bad is this much play? (video)

Im with Bret. Take the sprocket off and try to do that. It's either the splines on the main shaft or the splines on the gear.

Re: how bad is this much play? (video)

if you do weld it have someone tig it then chuck it in a lathe. shafts are usually heat hardended you dont want to change the temper then snap while your riding it.

Re: how bad is this much play? (video)

Could it just be the play between the gears?

Re: how bad is this much play? (video)

Its not that much play. I totally would not worry about it. Ride.

Re: how bad is this much play? (video)

i had a couple puchs like that its those cheap shit sprokets they sell but the shaft is hardened and the sproket is not so the sproket will strip out not the shaft

Re: how bad is this much play? (video)

Cool Breeze is right.

If you want to weld a jury rig fix, TIG that bitch. Even a smart MIG weld is too weak to hold under the temp and load that thing will be under.

Doesn't look like a lot of play on it. But, yeah - I agree....try a different sprocket. The shaft didn't look like it was moving...

Re: how bad is this much play? (video)

if all else fails,,,hack it ,,,tack weld the sprocket on the shaft,, lol or just wrap the shaft with duct tape.

Re: how bad is this much play? (video)

yeah, examine the splines more closely, if they are not obviously very worn (or knicked, though I think you'd be able to tell) where the sprocket sits, then I'd compare a new sprocket.

Re: how bad is this much play? (video)

That's going to snap off Harold. I'd replace the gear + shaft, I don't think welding will do the trick.
