AV7 ... blank canvas

aha! merry xmas to me!

just finished stripping my parts motor from the moped recycler (thanks Kev!) and found a gem of a little french heart in there.

ok, the variator was bent, the cam cracked, cylinder fins mangled, head rusted and corroded...

but the crank and case, they're perfect.

like zero-play, saved by years of oil perfect.

stator not so good either, but 12v at least. points and WD ought to do it, we'll see.

where should I go with this? what to do drive-side? ER2 with clutch? variotop + pulley? stock variator with a varplus?

I hear a few shops have kits in the pipe, but I'm tempted to place my first order with RCV.

it's ready to port, just have to crack the case. would be nice to get some bearings in there, too.

very happy to have it all apart and in nice shape considering my other motor isn't firing at this point. but that's another story.

pics tomorrow perhaps.

'night all, and merry xmas :)

Awesome, cant wait to see a nice buildup as I might have to follow along.

Re: AV7 ... blank canvas

to run the doppler clutch pulley, you buy a variator without a clutch.

Re: AV7 ... blank canvas

is the er2 not available avec ou sans embrayage? or is it seulement la er3?

Re: AV7 ... blank canvas

ha

dont go writing the whole thing in french... then we're still all just tempted.

er2 is available without an idle clutch.

so is er3.

Re: AV7 ... blank canvas

right mait I thought you had your choice, clutch or no clutch, i'll go back and check rcv...

just not sold on the clutch pulley thing, don't want to have to start the bike with the cardboard...

Re: AV7 ... blank canvas

yup according to RCV er2 and er3 are available with or without clutch! variotop only available without clutch.

the "clutch" they talk about is for kickstart or not.

with clutch is for kickstart models (but the idle clutch is just a roller bearing). And to use it on a non kickstart youd have to jam some cardboard or something into the variator.

without clutch is for regular models and you MUST get an idle pulley.

Re: AV7 ... blank canvas

crap. ok thanks.

not impressed with what i heard about start functions going bad on these.

not sure what route to go.

i rock cardboard. its no biggie.

the compression on the 70 kits destroys the kickstarter

Re: AV7 ... blank canvas

hmmn.

could one feasibly run a pull-start off the flywheel? I have a spare and I'm tempted to machine up receptacles for an old-school wrap-it-and-pull no-recoil rope starter.

just stoked to have my stock lump firing again. sooooo cold but i'm going for another ;)

Re: AV7 ... blank canvas

Dudes, get the variplus. Works good and you get to keep your clutch and it's easy as hell to install. Charges up hills and costs considerably more less. It's made by Malossi, so it's quality.

Re: AV7 ... blank canvas

...and you don't have to carry around cardboard.

Re: AV7 ... blank canvas

cardboard is for the hardcore moby owners!

Re: AV7 ... blank canvas

no guys, fuck cardboard.

I have a ER2 NO CLUTCH, and the dopple idle pulley, no problems with it ever. rode it every day for 5 months.

Re: AV7 ... blank canvas

doppler*

Re: AV7 ... blank canvas

while you're at it tear out that proboly bad condenser and mount it somewhere on the frame, to get that problem outta the way (new one can be bought at napa-1966chevynova6cylinder)

Re: AV7 ... blank canvas

cardboard is for people who don't have a choice.....

I concur about the condenser...

Re: AV7 ... blank canvas

most likey you will not have a problem with a doppler clutch pully but in sf with all the hills n stop and go traffic months of clutch pully riding really did a number on mine and the starter function has failed (basically a bicycle style freewheel cog mechanisum)

not to mention i also rode my GF for over a month doubles almost everyday too, cuz her bike was down (it was still the fastest bike around even with 2 of us)

Also my bike lives outside in the rain and weather, and i don't treat it at all like peter and many other pedders do thier bike. so my pully busting is mainly due to how and where i ride, as well as how my bike is treated.

So i say if u r going for real power the clutch pully is a good idea still, but i would not make that bike your main and only sorce of transportation for you and possably another lol. even sans clutch pully riding a bike in the state of tune as mine or peters daily requires alot of maintinence and upkeep so that it works day in and day out, much of witch is beyond what can be easily transcribed on these forums.

that said, buy a 150cc scooter if you want to do 60 reliably and care free. if u want to build a moby that can hit 60 your gonna have to work for it, if u want it to be your daily driver your gonna have to work for that too. just looking at how hard it is for ppl to keep stock bikes on the road in the repair section says it all.

But you do have an advantage over old stock equipment your starting from a blank canvas with mostly brand new parts, so you are in control of how this thing will go together, idealy you will also be the best mechanic for your bike since its being build using your logic not MBK's or Motobecanes.

have fun thats the main thing

Re: AV7 ... blank canvas

Elliot you know how to test shit! And for the record I don't want no 150cc scooter.

Main thing is I have a stock setup now that runs that I think I can trust - new condenser, coil, clean points, new piston and rings, good compression, etc. I've had it all apart and know what it's made of, thank god it freakin runs. ;)

This 2nd motor is for throwing spare time and money at.

For daily drivers I got a car and a bicycle, I'm pretty much OK.

As the parts trickle in and the weather gets warmer fun is pretty much a guarantee.

Can't wait for the kzoo bbq!

yeah i pretty much treat my bike like you do elliot

i have nowhere covered to store it. plus ive torn up driven pulleys and carbs and kickstarters and who knows what else
