best chain?

Just left Princess Auto without buying a chain. Not happy with the quality. What do y'all recommend? Is it #40?

Wrong size. you need 415

Re: best chain?

On one of my trips to Lowe's I noticed that they had masterlinks in the hardware aisle (all the little bins) and in the back of the drawer they had 10 ft lengths for sale, including #415 - about $24. If you want it quick and local it might be an option.

Re: best chain?

Find a D.I.D. or Iris chain or something similar.

Re: best chain?

You should be able to find K.M.C. 415H (96 links) chain at any bicycle shop that sells BMX oriented goods. Or open the yellow pages to B for Bearings and call around. Other places like Northern Tool or Harbor frieght may also carry the 415H chains

Re: best chain?

You guys rule. It's an 'iris' chain on there now. I mistakenly lost a link switching to the wrong drive cog, and now the rust bugs me. Lowes is opening a store 15mins from me, this is good news. Somehow I think local bike shops aren't going to be able to help though.

So Iris, D.I.D., KMC, Lowe's brand...

What's light and strong and durable? I was just reading on the custom sprockets thread that chains last about 6k on a guy's Ducati, mopeds he estimates 7.5k...

Re: best chain?

sorry the princess chains were not to your liking mike. they fit okay for me but i have zero dollars so i have to settle for what works if i cant make it myself.

Re: best chain?

Unfortunatly you won't to be able to pick up a 415 chain at a local hardware store. Order one at a local motorcycle dealership. They all have a bunch of aftermarket parts suppliers. But most likely the guy behind the counter has no clue, where to look. So you have to do the research yourself.

The biggest suppliers in Canada are

http://www.importationsthibault.com/

http://www.motovan.com/index_fr.html

http://www.partscanada.ca/

I ordered the a EK 415s chain from the importationsthibault catalog was $16. Or go for rhe racing stuff. That's about $60. Ouch!

I got all kinds of goodies by doing this, for example Michelin VM100 and Gazelles tires, mirrors, fuel filters, handle grips, light bulbs.

you save on the shipping and duty, and if they make a mistake ordering your parts, you don't have to accept. Saves you the damn return shipping hassle.

Good luck

Mike

Re: best chain?

seems to be this could be a much cooler/more interesting/more useful thread if people would post the brand/type of the BEST chain they've ever used, for whatever application. i've only ever used stock chains, but lately people like mopedshop.com and 1977mopeds.com are selling racing chains, and i keep seeing them and wondering how much difference it would make . . . so, you out there with race chains: what difference does it make? is it worth it for street use?

Re: best chain?

nah?

Re: best chain?

Yeah, I would be interested myself and was wondering the same exact thing. The couple of guy's I know with sport bikes basically bought them just because they were available and looked different, still don't know if they made any difference. But they do look different ;)

best chain?

Performance chains are better quality (Thicker link plates) and tend too last longer, if everything else is equal, like proper chain maintenance and riding conditions.

Will you go faster with it? NO!

Re: best chain?

If it's for the engine side, probably #41 or #42, the pedal chain would probably be #43 the width is what you will need to know, the chain pitches are all the same in the 40 series.

Re: best chain?

I don't know what difference it's supposed to make, you have a machine that tops out at about 2 bhp, even a rodded one would be no more then 5-6 bhp. The stuff that Princess auto or most lawnmower shops carry could easily handle 6 hp, so what is the complaint about quality?

Re: best chain?

D.I.D. and Iris chains are expensive but well worth the money. They are pre-stretched, so they don't lengthen. They last VERY long and I've never had one break, even with 70cc kits etc.

Re: best chain?

I bought an Iris chain from a lawnmower shop, cost about $1.50 a foot.

Re: best chain?

The cahins I've gotten from Treats this week are Choho out of Japan - seem to be high quality, and I don't hink you need to go to racing chains.

Re: best chain?

huh so it sounds like they last longer and look cooler, but they won't make you go any faster? good to know. i think i'll just oil my stock chain and save $60 for now. thanks all

Re: best chain?

I ordered a KMC from a local motorcycle shop, $16. We'll see how it looks next week. D.I.D. was $68, they told me these were for 125cc dirtbikes mostly.

Princess auto chain, in addition to being of questionable size, looks more like it's made for industrial DIY applications, I want something made for a vehicle, if you know what I mean.

Don't get me wrong guys I'm not looking to spend an arm and a leg on every part, I'm just looking for the right stuff.

If a dirtbike chain costs way too much and is heavier than necessary, I'll go with a moped-specific chain, which is what the KMC is purported to be. I'll keep you posted.
