sachs kids are ass expensive, but pretty awesome from what i hear.
yeah i got the athena 80cc reed valve kit (and yeah it was a pretty penny) and am saving for the pipe and carb but have got some advise from someone saying basically that the shite was a death trap due to the the frame and swing arm.
The 80cc Athena wont fit on a stamped frame Columbia Commuter unless you do some cutting and welding to the tank portion of the frame.
stock is totally the new black.
If it's not kitted, it's not cool.
oh man, really nick? i've always had plans to kit a stamped commuter, as it's the lightest 505 frame out there.. good to know.
garv, don't listen to people and their "death trap" crap. going over 50 on just about any moped is asking for trouble.. it just comes with the territory.
damn it all to hell
i'm really not happy about how this project is looking
yeah the not fiitng part is killing me now
when it rains it pours i guess
cut, weld, repeat
yeah i am going to go through with it reagrdless of the molehills i keep turning into mountains
you can actually cut, and reweld the front engine mount, to get the intake to clear, you only need about 3/8 inch, drill the rear hole and piviot it around the middle hole, easy, clean, quick.
I was the one who told him it was a bad idea, we built one this summer and right around 35- forty the thing got really squirrely. The whole bike had been rebuilt, repainted, and everything was put together right. They are definitely the lighetst sachs frames out there, they are also the flimsiest. I dont want to crap on anyone's parade, i wish you luck, if you have any questions please let me know, i'd be more than happy to answer them.
The 70cc kit would fit just fine though.
yeah but i have the 80 though so it looks like that's what i will be using
i doubt treats wants to give me my money back for it so it looks like i will be remounting the engine
and i am sure i will have some questions for you graham once i get around to actually doing it
thanks for the tips
garvan
but the 70cc goes right on right? anything else needed for the 70cc or just mount it on and go?
the more i think about the more i am leaning towards the 70cc
if i can return the 80cc kit
we'll see
Garvan. Before you do anything, you should stop by choke when shaw is around. He is probably the best moped engine builder in the U.S. and now you are fortunate enough to have him in your backyard. I think he goes to choke on thursdays now. Talk to him, see what he says, and then make your decision.
hi tommy.
hey cam i totally just looked everywhere for that "restricting gasket"? that you were talking about and came up with nada
hi cam.
Garvan, shaw is actually at choke today if you want to swing by and talk to him.
yeah i just got back from there my plug fouled half way there and i had to push my bike the rest of the way
i'm an idiot and forgot to put my tools back in my bag after tinkering, he seems to be really rooting for the 80cc with a custom intake. i'm going to head back with the kit so he can take a look at it and think over posibilities.
the ball is still up in the air on this one for now
Any update on this? I am looking into kits for my commuter as well. What's the word on that 70 kit, is it pretty stable/safe?
I don't want/need to go really fast, just 40-45ish.
yeah, why cut new holes for the engine or cut out part of the frame for an intake? just cut and weld an intake that'll fit. or am I missing something?
the 80cc has a big four petal reed, it would be a real pain in the ass to get a tube welded onto it, plus it would really kill the flow path. we just welded tiny little tabs onto the frame and bolted in the motor .5 inch down.
Update...The bike got stolen so we never got a chance to try the kit out...
