Polini Crankcase on Peugeot 103

So does anyone have any words of wisdom on a bike with a Polini crankcase on it and Polini kit on it? What timing have folks been using I'm at 1.4mm? I'm running it along with a PHBG 19mm with a 55 idle jet and 112 main jet and it's still not on the money. I will take some photos of it pretty quick and post those, though I already posted some of the intake mouth. Tunning the spring assembly and the variator also seems to be a little tricky and time consuming!

these parts arent for amateurs, i'm not saying you are one, but this stuff requires large amounts of time and patience to tweak it perfectly. with so many levels of fine tuning and adjustability, the effort is large but the payoff is amazing.

Re: Polini Crankcase on Peugeot 103

Is this the bike that you have the CDI on?

1.5 is stock for any points setup and .9-1.4 seems to be working on the CDI.

What is going wrong and at what stage?

That carb also has a needle from what I remember, right?

Re: Polini Crankcase on Peugeot 103

Oh it's just choppy and bogs of the line but then climbs in rpm a little and just pretty much explodes all at once and rips after that. It's annoying a little to ride and I trying to work it so it runs a little better of the line. But heh I've only spent saturday afternoon trying to tune it. It seems much much more sensitive to changes now then it did before with just the stock case and the 70 cc kit on it. I'm going to play around with the timing a bit more and see how it performs with some changes. I used a timing tool and a dial indicator reading the plunger on that tool to do the timing on the bike so I'm positive that I'm running dead on 1.4mm. I'm not that worried about, it will just take some time. I was just curious if anyone had some suggestions :-).

Re: Polini Crankcase on Peugeot 103

i want to see this thing.

Re: Polini Crankcase on Peugeot 103

I have limited PHBG experience but i have noticed that when you change the needle, idle jet or idle mixture adjustment, or main jet it effects the other and that these settings run into the next closest tuning device. Like when you change the needle or needle height you will also need to change your idle mixture and main jet. Because this requires a balance tuning can be quite frustrating

Re: Polini Crankcase on Peugeot 103

i hate phgb

i want to bore a 16mm sha rather than try to switch to a phgb. maybe i just dumb though.

Re: Polini Crankcase on Peugeot 103

You have bad low end because your kit was designed to work with a different variator, at higher Rpm's. The Doppler Er3 variator was installed ona full Polini Peugeot witha doppler pipe, and it went from having bad low end to ripping low end. THe initial pulley size is a smaller diameter, and the max is larger, and you can tune the weights to open after your well into your power band.

Note: you probably need to upgrade the engine spring if you run a aftermarket variator. Doppler and polini both make spring hookups.

Re: Polini Crankcase on Peugeot 103

bret where might one buy one of them Doppler Er3's for a 103?

Re: Polini Crankcase on Peugeot 103

Dan, Kevin, or Rcv-team.

Re: Polini Crankcase on Peugeot 103

I'm probably not running the optimal variator since it's a variotop but it would appear to have significantly lower end with a 25mm vs 34mm of base shaft of the stock variator and slightly more top end, I still need to measure that. I managed to smooth it out a little bit more this morning but I'm leaning towards a combination of timing and further tunning of the phbg. But one thing at a time and I'm guessing the phbg takes very methodical changes to dial it in properly. Oh and I have the polini spring and kick pedal since they come with the polini case. :-)

Re: Polini Crankcase on Peugeot 103

variotop has a ton more top end, more than any other aftermarket variator...like 115mm or something vs the stock 90 or whatever.

Re: Polini Crankcase on Peugeot 103

Ahh thanks for the information shaler... much appreciated. It's damn heavy variator though I must say, other then that the construction is nice.

Re: Polini Crankcase on Peugeot 103

Have you tried lightening the wieght in your Var-plus or variotop, or whichever it is you have? At what speed/Rpm does your variator fully open?

Re: Polini Crankcase on Peugeot 103

I'm not sure on the speed yet since I have only been on it this sat and will be tonight so only one afternoon so far and I have no speedometer .. maybe 25 or better or? The motor winds up a significant amount before it starts to variate. I can shift it anyways with the pedal to wind the motor up more so thats can be changed while I ride. I actually started with lighter weights in the variator and ended up moving up a bit. I was making the assumption the polini likes a fair amount of rpm to really like to work.

Re: Polini Crankcase on Peugeot 103

For not being completely tuned just yet this thing is fast all as all hell already. He was flying up hills like a monster, and the foot lever on the motor is sick shit.
