70cc athena reed puch

Okay my newport was not running when i got it, although i have put it new points, condensor, techno estroil, and 70cc reed vavle kit by athena, carb is 17mm amal with mixture screw turned 1.5 turns out. When i take it for a ride it maxes out at 27mph with no powerband, everything is assembled correctly, i've been through that more then once. Initial take off is decent but the engine will not perform much past that. Also spark plug is brownish to tan with some wetness when removed. Could this be caused by a crank seal or something more serious?

What size jet in your carb? What air filter are you using?

i am running a 17mm amal carb with the amal filter on it (thread on type) and the main jet is a 60

I was having similar issues with a similar setup. I advanced the timing a tiny bit and saw a huge performance increase. However, I also had some compression issues due to a stripped cylinder head bolt. The bolt was replaced and felt more solid (better acceleration and top end). Removed the stock Amal air filter and it screams now. Beautiful. I wonder if the same would work for you....timing and air filter, that is. Of course, there are numerous other variables that could be affecting it.

If you remove the air filter and see much better performance at open throttle, does that mean you could downjet and leave the air filter on. I am about to rig some sort of rubberband/pantyhose filter over the carb's air intake port and enjoy the ride.

i just fixed the jetting on my mine. it's piston port though and not a reed. i would not take that airfilter off unless you're running like 20:1 with motul 800 2t. that is if you've got the rhino horn looking intake (forward facing). i've got a 15mm amal and i'm running a 45 jet. i had crazy low end but topped out under 30. now, i'm screaming. i'm still breaking it in, but i'm hoping for 50+ after port matching and all that shit.

so if i were to check compression what am i looking to get for a reading and what is the procedure? i wouldn't imagine its the same as a 4 cycle engine
