if i'm using a less restrictive air filter than before, i should upjet right?
more air, more fuel?

Yes,
plug chop to tell how much to up jet.
this might be turning into a not so quick tuning question.
so i put a bigger jet in the old dellorto, 54 to 56 to be exact. and i couldn't get it close to running long enough to do a plug chop. it would barely run on the stand, i had to keep revving it, and it would bog down until about 3/4 throttle and then it would pick up again. once i would let it down off the stand i would have a real hard time just keeping it running, let alone moving. it tried that for a good half hour.
so i put the 54 back in, and it was running alright, it would start, accelerate and everything, but it would start acting crazy if you went WOT for too long. a couple of times it did a kind of mini bog ( if that makes sense) and then there was this loud pop that sounded like it came out the air intake.
so i just kept it going for about 5 blocks and killed it to do a plug chop. came out almost white, just brownish around the edges. i'm pretty new to this tuning stuff. help me out.
thanks
If the engine picks up at 3/4 throttle it indicates it gets too much fuel/too little air at lower revs.
What kind of carb are you running?
i think its the original carb on my garelli, a dellorto SHA 14.12
Hmm, if it has a throttle needle, try the 54 jet with the needle in the lowest or single lowest position. That's done by putting the clip on the highest or single highest setting.
56 jet, sorry ;)
No needle adjusting with a SHA carb, Jet change and idle adjustment only on it.
what was that popping noise? should i be concerned?
Lean mixtures can cause a bark back through the intake.
