Tell me more about this 50/50 thing

so whats the deal? I read the thread on the 50/50 and if its just got a pipe and the rest is modified stock why buy performance stuff? or do not many bikes have the capability to be this good?

Im gearing up to hop up a couple peds but this has me thinking both as a cheap bastard and for the challenge, ive got a puch and a moby 50v, let me know your thoughts

thanks

johnny

Re: Tell me more about this 50/50 thing

it takes a lot of work, which is why most people would rather kit peds. i just think 50ccs is more fun. i have my madass 138 for when i want to go crazy fast.

i also kinda cheated a little. my cylinder is the best puch cylinder we got in america. the #22 and #11 korado top ends are awesome. basically like a 50cc kit. 6 ports, single ring boost port piston, big exhaust port etc etc.

but yes you can take any moped and with some TLC, porting and gearing u can hit 50 with them

Re: Tell me more about this 50/50 thing

cool stuff, im thinking a new winter project is on the horizon

Re: Tell me more about this 50/50 thing

I was doing 43 (checked against a digital car speedo, on the flat, in 15 degree weather) with my E50, #33 hi-torq, with all stock parts (even the pipe) it wasn't so good on the low-end, but once i hit 20 it was pulling the teeth out of your head.

The key is are-you-fucking-nuts porting, a higher heat range plug, obscene compression, hi-test gas, synthetic 2t oil, and open everything up as much as possible. It knocked with low quality oil or anything less than 93 gas, and would diesel (run while turned off) in cold weather. If someone had paid me 10 bucks an hour for all the work i did on that bike, it probably would have been a 600 -1000 dollar engine by the time i was done. I'm going to try to be going forty with an aluminum cylinder by Red October. I'll be cheating and using a pipe though.

Re: Tell me more about this 50/50 thing

are ther any porting guides for puch, saw the moby one

thanks again guys for the info

Re: Tell me more about this 50/50 thing

A pipe is not considered cheating

Re: Tell me more about this 50/50 thing

good cause im going for the pipe, now do i have to bore out the original carb or is it cool to upgrade? how bout the intake?

Re: Tell me more about this 50/50 thing

there are no OFFICIAL rules. this isnt scooter army. its just about the accomplishment. you will feel it yourself. the first time i really really felt like i was flying on this motor, i pulled over, looked at it and felt a sense of pride.

"i built this crazy thing!" is what i was thinking. even my gf who doesnt like mopeds much was impressed when she was clocking me in her car.

think about it like this. you could take a stock bike, slap a pipe on it, gear it high as fuck and you would hit 50 with a tailwind. so technically "you would be in" so to speak. but when it takes you a minute and a half to hit 50mph its not very impressive.

just build something crazy man! really give it your all. get a 2 stroke tuning book and actually read that shit. no porting guide (not many exist) is anywhere near as good as teaching yourself.

i know absolutely NOTHING about mechanics or engines or carpentry or masonry or whatever. all of my knowledge has to do with mopeds and mostly puch. all learned from blowing a bunch of shit up... lol

Re: Tell me more about this 50/50 thing

Harold

I know there are no rules ( hate rules ) Im on the same page as you, i just wanted to try this the "right " way. I get the biggest kick out of resurecting old junk that hasnt run in a long time, its pretty hard to explain to someone who doesnt get it and no words are needed for someone who does get it

Wow, that was all poetic and shit, i better start drinking

thanks again harold

P.S. did you try to knock all kinds of weight of the ped also?

Re: Tell me more about this 50/50 thing

I am a keep it at 50cc fan. I am amazed by some of the mods the parts changers do with kitting but once you get bigger then 50cc it is no longer a moped in manu areas of Canada and USA.

Anyhow the engines on our mopeds were detuned to keep them slow and user friendly and generic. There is a lot of simple tuning to get a little more speed or acceleration but just to warn anyone trying to do stuff - it is addictive - o geee SO ADDICTIVE - spend all weekend tinkering and everynight adjusting and tweeking and figuring and modding and the BEST part - riding

I got to go and adjust my timing and carb

Re: Tell me more about this 50/50 thing

yeh, it's really stupid. I'm juggleing my career, school and mopeds... 20%, 20%, 60% I'm a moped-junkie. if it was anything else I'd need to be in rehab... maybe I'll need to in the next few years... wait what's that sound... oh just a weed whacker.

Re: Tell me more about this 50/50 thing

Just a weedwacker? Get some respect.

Re: Tell me more about this 50/50 thing

totally. stripped the shit ouf the ped and cut off all excess weight as well as tightening my clutch 2.5 turns for the most accelleration i could get at 18x45 gearing.

Harold, don't forget your expert knowledge of the many uses of duct tape.

Re: Tell me more about this 50/50 thing

50% torque and 50% RPM

Re: Tell me more about this 50/50 thing

to me, a true 50/50 machine is one where you use all the stock motor parts, not including the induction and exhaust, and do lots of fancy work to it to get 50mph.

stock piston, stock cylinder. don't get me wrong, 50mph on a 50cc moped that you can actually ride around regularly is pretty freakin awesome.. kit or not, but i have the most respect for the peds like steve's where he took a stock puch top end, went to town on the porting, played around with different pipes and carbs and timing and everything else, until he got the thing to do 50+, and still be respectable on slower rides.

this is just my opinion, and you won't catch me hating on anyone's 50cc kit that does 50+, because i know that it takes more than slapping on a kit to go fast.

plus, it's just awesome to look at steve's moped and see what looks like a stock puch moped motor sitting there, and then to have him blast by when i'm pinned in the mid 40's.

Re: Tell me more about this 50/50 thing

Ha, that cylinder is blushing from the flattery cause actually that old dog is worn out. I think I actually wore through the nikasil in a few spots. Dean is running the hot 50 around here now. Fifties Forever-------Snords

Re: Tell me more about this 50/50 thing

i've always held the belief that mopeds are like haiku poetry.

create something amazing, creative, and beautiful within a very very limited set of specifications. i dont put nearly as much engineering into my cars and bikes that can do 100+ mph easily, because i dont have to. sure i could build some really crazy stuff, but taking a 25 mph moped and making it do 50 is way cooler than taking a 110 mph car and making it do 150. no way is a pipe cheating either, i was just being coy. My little Annie has a lot of catching up to do.
