Tune up to make moped faster

I am interested in buying a moped. I have never bought a moped before or ridden a moped.I am actually debating between a moped or a youth street legal dirt bike. I am on the small size for a woman 5ft, so I am not sure which is better for transportation but I wanted a bike that will go at least more than 30-35MPH. Is their anyway a moped like a Puch or tomos can be tuned up its speed? I was watching on YouTube.com and some peoples puch and tomos mopeds were hitting 50MPH!! I was amazed and was wondering how they went about doing that. I am no mechanic, but can it brought to a shop or something to be tuned up like that thanks guys

Re: Tune up to make moped faster

My advice as a moped shop worker and moped owner of 10+ years, avoid "buyer's remorse"!! Buy new or you'll be working on it every time you ride. No joke. We have a guy who comes in every day about something broken on his vintage ped. He just wants to get around, you know? He's not trying to be in a gang, etc....

If you can afford it, buy a new Tomos. They're awesome and designed for urban riding. You'll go 35 stock without any peformance upgrades. They have a few different styles but every model is 50cc has a pedal or kick start option and comes with a factory warranty. 1977mopeds sells the base model, Sprint, for $999 and we will ship it. It comes 90% assembled. All you need to do is bolt on the handle bars and pedals.

Heaven forbid something should brake, or you want to go faster. Tomos still makes a full line of parts for every bike they make or made. Not even Honda can claim that.

You always make new. You will love your moped more. :)

Re: Tune up to make moped faster

if you buy used, the minarelli engines are very stout tough little things that can do 35-40mph with very minimal work and will still be very reliable. minarelli made engines up till the late 70's or earliest years of the 80's as best i can remember. on a minarelli powered ped, its usually the other stuff that breaks and not the engine, assuming its running properly.

Re: Tune up to make moped faster

I hear that. I've spent more time adjusting the frame on my minerelli powered bianchi than I have with the engine.

Re: Tune up to make moped faster

The first thing on the minarelli v1 powered peds are them wheels with cup/cone/bearing. Switch out first get tomos or sachs mag wheels to fit on the frames.

Re: Tune up to make moped faster

make new? impossible!

Re: Tune up to make moped faster

sophia there are plenty of moped owners in boston that can help you. if you ever get your hands on a puch i can actually walk you through what can be done. my bike isnt running right now. but you can get a puch and kit the bike. i have a magnum which is significantly heavier than a maxi. with the 75cc kit on the lighter maxi im sure you would fly. this kit requires alot of work to put in though and you can get away with something smaller and not have to take a grinder to your case.

Re: Tune up to make moped faster

Buy a Tomos with pedals, and modify. If you get pulled over, at least you can point to the pedals and say, Ossifer, you must be mistaken, this is a MOPED.
