Leaky Puch gas cap

so.... I think that I once heard that gas caps should vent a little so that a suction isn't created as the gas drains into the intake... but my cap is ridiculous, if the tank is full and I go for a ride I will definitely have gas and oil crud leaking out of the cap and running down my tank... Is this common? is there a way to fix it? Should I just buy a new cap?

Re: Leaky Puch gas cap

This is common

The fix is: Don't top your tank off. Fill it till about half an inch under the edge and the problem is solved.

Re: Leaky Puch gas cap

Its probably leaking from the gasket, not the vent anyway. Like what has already been mentioned just don't top the tank all the way off.

Re: Leaky Puch gas cap

I ave some rubber that is perfect for making those gasket seals

Re: Leaky Puch gas cap

Cork works good too

Re: Leaky Puch gas cap

What kind of rubber do you use? Like silicone from a tube, or what?

Re: Leaky Puch gas cap

Cut a few from old truck inner tubes (enough material to make hundreds of gaskets).

Re: Leaky Puch gas cap

Bump for more info...

When you cut out the gasket seal,

do you just cut out a circle kind of, and then glue it to the underside of the cap?

Re: Leaky Puch gas cap

No glue. There are two metal tabs that hold the gas cap to the frame. A rubber circle gasket can be strectched over those tabs and they hold it in place. It is loose, but at least it won't fall off.

Re: Leaky Puch gas cap

Cool, I'll find some kind of rubber that'll work, and try that.
