depends on what your looking for and were you live (hills)
18X40 is a good even gear, not to low and not to high.
18 is way to high for a one speed and hills....16 is probably what your looking for...if you drive on decent flatness, an 18 will give you good top but take a while
that's why I said depends on where you live.

18 is like the highest you can put on the pinion
A fabricated 22 sprocket WILL fit on the countershaft of a Puch E50 or ZA50 block with machining of the block to provide clearance for the chain.
where can we get one of those?back in the day some guys used a 20t sproket.
I've got the same ped and kit. I bought the 18 th and ran for awhile. Very poor accell so i put the 16 th back on. Much better low end and decent topend.
I am currently using a 20 tooth front sprocket on my ZA50.
As for where I got them, I acquired an original 20t somewhere in the late 1980s from an unknown puch model.
I could not find anymore so I decided to machine a custom 20t as seen in the attached image.
If no image is attached, go to my home page to see image.
is that a 20t sproket off a Derbi?
Yes, it is a Derbi 20t sprocket that was first machined in the center and a Puch spline was welded in place.
Nice job on the sprocket, and nice quotr:
