1978 Sachs - Rear Wheel not spinning easily

Hello fellow, riders.

I recently picked up a '78 Sachs as a new project.

The first issue I want to address is the rear wheel. It doesn't spin easily and when it's forced, it turns "once" and then I hear a puffing sound.

Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Pull the decompression lever

Re: 1978 Sachs - Rear Wheel not spinning easily

sounds like your clutches are stuck engaged.

Re: 1978 Sachs - Rear Wheel not spinning easily

The valve isn't connected to a cable, but I pulled it manually, though the linkage doesn't seem to stay on easily.

Even after pulling the entire valve out, it's doing the same thing.

Re: 1978 Sachs - Rear Wheel not spinning easily

Would spraying some brake cleaner into it and force-rotating the wheel several times free it up?

Or should I just go ahead and take it apart?

Re: 1978 Sachs - Rear Wheel not spinning easily

Take off the drive chain. If the rear wheel still has issues with the drive chain off, then you need to take it apart and figure out why. If it doesn't then the drag is coming from your engine/trans and that's where you need to look.

Re: 1978 Sachs - Rear Wheel not spinning easily

yea you definitely got some decomp issues, but that's separate. if it's puffing and turning sortof difficult that sounds like you're turning the engine over, which shouldnt happen unless something was engaging the clutch

Re: 1978 Sachs - Rear Wheel not spinning easily

Great. Thank you.

I took the chain off and the wheel spins freely, so it has to be the engine/trans.

Re: 1978 Sachs - Rear Wheel not spinning easily

Sounds like clutch is staying engaged .. the decompressor cable also pulls the clutch .. it might need adjusting

Re: 1978 Sachs - Rear Wheel not spinning easily

I opened up the tranny.

What's the best way to remove the clutch nut?

I've seen using a piston stop, but have heard that can seriously damage the piston.

I had the same problem with my Sachs when I first got it, you most likely need to adjust the clutch. The link below is the manual for the Sachs moped, page 23 ‘Adjusting Starter and Decompression Lever’ is what you need to look at.

Re: 1978 Sachs - Rear Wheel not spinning easily

yea, video linked on here, and some tips to remove the nut.

I usually use some rope in the plug hole, but i've used a piston stop plenty and braced a driver vs the back of the flywheel, that last one's especially risky but it can work. Piston stop's a little dangerous mostly because the plug hole is angled, so it's the corner of the stop that's busting against the piston, but it does still work. it's less than ideal but still a workable solution.
