Stuck Cylinder

Hello, I tried removing the head and cylinder from my sons A35 yesterday and the head came off pretty easy but the cylinder is really stuck. The piston moves and the moped runs so a stuck piston is not the cause. The studs had some corrosion on them when I removed the head so my guess is that the studs have corrosion inside the cylinder and that is causing the issue. What is the best way to remove a cylinder when this is the case. I suspect the rod bearing or piston pin has some play in it since this engine has an odd noise in it so I wanted to check it out since we just bought this moped a few days ago. Also, I wanted to buy the Viton seals from treatland but they are out of stock, what is the next best option. Thanks.

Re: Stuck Cylinder

if it were me i'd spray pb blaster on the studs where they come out of the cylinder, wait a while repeat, wait a while repeat etc. with any luck it'll work it's way down and eventually you'll be able to wiggle the cylinder a bit. spray some more, wiggle, spray, wiggle etc. it could take a while for the blaster to soak in. i'd try to avoid prying with a screwdriver or tapping with a hammer if u can.

Re: Stuck Cylinder

If all else fails, tap the cylinder on the backside with a rubber mallet until the cylinder works itself free from the studs. (edited)

tried that and didn't work.

I tried that and it wouldn't budge. It is sitting out there and I give it a shot of PB blaster every once in a while. It may work it's way down or it might not. I know for sure if it comes loose I will never have this issue again because anti-seize will be used. I tapped with a dead blow hammer on the cylinder every way possible and nothing has worked yet. There has to be a solution because I have read this is sort of common. Just need more tips because it is bound to come loose at some point.

You removed the exhaust and the intake, right?

Just checking because you didn't mention it.

ha ha. Yeah. I finally got it to come off. I was able to easily remove the two lower cylinder studs but the top two were the ones with the corrosion. I used PB Blaster and a wrench on the side of the studs and hit the wrench to help shock them. I then used a pair of vice grips and a hammer to break them free. Then carefully used the vice grips to go back and forth to loosen the rust and after a while the two upper studs came out. What a pain in the butt. Sadly my induction coil broke a while back or they would have came loose a lot easier.

Re: Stuck Cylinder

A little late but, id inspect the tranny side first since the tomos gearbox does make a ton of noises and typically whines and whirrs.

The classic remedy for stuck parts is penetrating oil + vibration.

Apply penetrating oil of your choice to all connections, and anywhere you suspect that adherence is happening. Wait for the oil to set in, then gently tap all points that were oiled, with a leather mallet (if you don't have one use a rubber or plastic mallet) or if you have something that vibrates (like a massage tool or even an oscillating multi tool without the blade) that could come in handy. Sometimes this will release the part right at first, but usually you'll have to repeat your application of penetrant and then wait for at least 30 minutes to an hour; then repeat the tapping/vibration. The penetrant will seep in over time. Read the directions on the bottle.

When you set up vibrations, it helps the penetrant to seep into the frozen sections of the part. You may have to repeat this process a few times. If after this, it's still stuck, you'll be obligated to try heating. Use a good heat gun on the high setting or use a propane torch like the old-timers used to; try tapping periodically during this process of heating. Restrict your heat application to only one side of the part, be careful not to heat the base as much as possible; you're trying to get only the stuck part to expand with heat against the base which hopefully will not expand and remain cool. Tapping with your mallet should help to release the stuck part.

Good luck with it.
