Before I get my hands dirty

Scott Malcolmson /

Hey folks! I recently acquired a 1972 garreli(blue) and a 71 motocebene moped (orange). The garelli runs great! The motocebene however, needs some tlc. It requires new crankshaft bearings, apparently it does have spark and compression though, so that's good. I have the replacement bearings and am starting to prep for a sweet winter project, my question to you folks, is any recommendations for "while your in there" parts I should replace like gaskets seals etc? Any help, tips, etc are welcome. I'm really looking forward to this project, kind of a start to a dream of mine.

Nice looking bikes!

Depends on what you're going for. Does keeping everything stock matter? Do you want to go fast? How fast, and how much do you want to spend?

Rebuilding the motors with new gaskets and seals is a great idea. Garellis often need the rubber clutch replaced because people will run detergent bearing oil in them and ruin the rubber. But if your bike is running fine that may not have happened. :)

I recommend picking up a 15 SHA carburetor and intake for the moby. Gurtners are terrible. I'd also get a le partie CDI for it because points are also terrible. :)

Thanks! I appreciate the reply. As for my plan, eventually yeah, I'd like to make some more power, not to worried about keeping it stock. I'll definitely look into the parts mentioned. I'm so looking forward to have an engine project. I miss the days of wrenching and inevitably cussing at said wrenches haha!

Re: Before I get my hands dirty

Having the right long nose circlip pliers is essential for popping the variator, the correct pullers are nice too.

Got a bit of a gem do I? Good news!!

Re: Before I get my hands dirty

The garelli is looking sweet. Please take the time to read up on them and their quirks. They are fun bikes but have their issues and limits. Keeping things stock will definitely extend the life of the bike, but kitting it out now is pretty easy. The wiki on here should have lots of info, plus a manual for the engine.

Re: Before I get my hands dirty

No one with any sense would recommend that you open up that engine to do bearings and not do everything else that is probably already bad or on its way there. Your crank seals are over 40 years old and it is not worth keeping them and risking having a terrible time with air leaks after you do all the hard stuff. Get into the wiki and especially Rebel Moby's collection of amazing information. As to the points ignition, once you install a new condenser externally, and if your stator and HT coils are okay, no problem using the stock ignition for a while. If you go with the 15mm carb, make sure you do your homework. You need the right (Malossi) shortie intake with a few modifications, plus de-restricting the pipe to get the benefits of the larger carb/intake. Rebel Moby takes you through all of this stuff. Good luck with those cool bikes!

Re: Before I get my hands dirty

tbh, if i was already rebuilding, i'd do it on some AV10 cases. i'd even send you a half-decent 70cc av10 topend for it. but it's like 100 bucks and opens way more options later on, but even kept mostly stock it's just better platform
