Vespa Ciao Px 1986 Drowning

Hello fellas, i am new to the whole moped thing.

My Ciao turned off when i was out riding, and it wouldnt start again. So i took the carburetor and nothing seemed wrong. And it still wouldnt start, however when it has been standing for about a day it starts up for like 2-3 sec and shuts off and will not start again. My thought is that it is drowning, but i dont really know how to fix it if thats the problem. So please comment some fixes:)

Re: Vespa Ciao Px 1986 Drowning

I'd pull the carb and clean it out thoroughly!

Oh boy I’ve cleaned that sucker 2 times the last month

Re: Vespa Ciao Px 1986 Drowning

Assuming that you're getting good spark?

Yes. Isn’t it supposed to be blue

Re: Vespa Ciao Px 1986 Drowning

Yes sir! If it was running well, and then all of a sudden is having issues, and you think it is fuel related, it is likely your carb. Are you running an in line filter? Could just be getting some small particles clogging up the jet

Re: Vespa Ciao Px 1986 Drowning

Yes, I have one in the tank, one in the fuel line, and the one in the carb. But likely isn’t the jet because I had the carb off today

Re: Vespa Ciao Px 1986 Drowning

How well is the fuel flowing from the petcock? Constant stream or light trickle? Does the float operate smoothly? Do you notice any difference if you take off the gas cap and try it then?

Sudden shutoff, plus runs briefly after sitting, does sound like a fuel delivery issue. But could also be electrical.

Does it have contact points ignition or a CDI? If points, test the condenser.

Fuel runs smooth no difference with cap off. Float moves just fine. Contact points👍🏼

If it's not a new spark plug try a new one.

Spark plug works fine

Sometimes plugs work fabulously outside the combustion chamber , but , once under compression will not fire adequately , if at all .

I've tried to explain that to people for years. Not saying I'm right but you'll be mad after rebuilding everything just to try a new plug last after all else has failed and it fires up. I'm not going to admit to how many times I've done that. Hell I can't even remember........

New spark plug worked ⚡️

Good deal! Always keep a spare when riding 2 strokes.

Same shit happened again. Only difference now is the fact that no sparkplugs make any spark. It happened exactly like last time. Starts not responding to throttle, and slowing down and then it wont start again.

Replace the condenser .

Do the following . The instructions are for Puch , but basically the same for any moped .

This ^^^^^^ also make sure the wire from the points that attached to the hot coil has a good connection on the hot coil prong. Like actually take it off, clean the hot coil spade prong and make sure the connector has a TIGHT connection. Also check the hot coil ground to the frame. Remove the plug boot and trim a little of the plug wire off and reinstall the boot. If all this fails then clean the points.

Forgot to add that there is electricity coming out me and a friend, checked that but no spark. Could it be the coil?

Re: Vespa Ciao Px 1986 Drowning

If you're generating power but not getting spark it's either the coil, plug boot, plug, or sometimes even a faulty kill switch.

Okay so i had a cool laying around, and when I put the multimeter on it the 2 coils had the same ohms? I don’t really know anything about that tho? But can that help in any direction? I’ve just had the other coil on it with a spark plug I also had laying around but it seems those are not the problem. But I am not sure if the other coil is faulty. Hope you can help👍🏼

You replaced the condenser? It should be on the outside of the cases.

I am not familiar with this, but from what I know isn’t the condenser on the inside. I just can’t see any at an inside problem when it is getting electricity?

Re: Vespa Ciao Px 1986 Drowning

Just depends on the cases. Some were located inside, some outside. Non turn signal models were on the inside, turn signal models outside, because there is an extra stator for the lights. Doesn't really matter where it is, as long as it's wired into the ignition side

Re: Vespa Ciao Px 1986 Drowning

Mine does not have turn signals, so on the inside. I know that this Ciao had some condenser problems before. But from what i think it should not be an inside problem cus it is generating electricity and the rear light also lights up when i pedal. I am not familiar with the inside of the flywheel and stuff, but isnt the electricity going to the coil out in the sparkplug. And from the coil out in the headlight, and out in the rear light and back to the coil or sum?

Re: Vespa Ciao Px 1986 Drowning

Vespas r external ignition ground. Try grounding your blue wire out of the stator. If it runs and you want your brake lights to actually work then read up on your electrical system.
