Solex gas tank repair fix ???

Any plastic chemical people? I got this 1977 3800 solex with the standard tank seam leak, it looses gas and i'vd tried to expoxy the seam a few times but just fails with time. So much for getting 200 mi/ga. I know reproductions are available but wheres the fun in that.

With some heat and patience the clam opened.

20220407_071513.jpg

So it looks like some kinda thin glue and the halves just slide together, voila! Just need to figure out the brown drippy loose adhesive.

The plastic itself is pretty pliable and rubbery. Ill be testing with adhesives and posting for future Solex referance.

Re: Solex gas tank repair fix ???

I'd clean the connecting surfaces and apply a decent coat of Red Kote tank sealer to the seam tongue and groove . Then press them together with a bit of weight .

Red Kote stays pliable , but , has good adhesion .

RedKote is bunk. It, like Kreem and POR-15, is ethanol based. Ethanol creates the catalyst for gardening, therefore ethanol bases will always soften them.

Caswell is the way.

^So not looking to line the whole tank, just the appropriate adhesive for the seam / joint on the cheap.

So pvc cleaner and transition pvc/abs glue aint it. Rubs right off.

Lots of moped plastics are abs.

Anyone use seal all. Contact cement everyting resistant.

I'm saying that if I were you:

Apply lining of Caswell on edge of plastic, push together, and than line it heavy.

It will be a single piece for eternity.

Or, just source a metal Solex tank and leave the chemicals for huffing.

Caswell would bond it.

I can attest to this stuff, it’s been holding my plastic fuel tank together 2 years now.

I dont have tank liner $50 plus two part epoxies laying around so...still looking for og solex adhesive, it might just be super glue. I dried a couple dimples on one side and it sticks hard.

Hmm interesting, looks like jb weld plastic bonder is urethane based, hmmm. So is the fixed leak sitting in the gas mix, full contact?

It's $32, or you can just muckle it up trying some random chemicals you find in the garage.

I have the leftovers from a kit of Caswell, it's enough to put that together. You can have it for shipping cost. PM me.

^^^thanks for the offers,

So after testing the super glue dimples in gas for a couple of hours its still hard and dont scratch off... So i squeezed a tube and a half into the side with the well and held them together. Bam superglue everywhere. Time will tell or hopefully Monsuier Solex will chime in. Cyanoacetate is underated.

Hey, just sitting back and watching your experiments!

My 1980 FA is the only year to have the elusive side of tank fuel level gauge. The threaded insert (O.D. about the size of a jockey puck) is molded into the side of the tank and cracked at the factory seam. I rotozipped the entire thing out and glued it back in. So yeah, always in contack with fuel.

^cool, i was hesitant as i've had that stuff fail on a radiator overflow container. Stuff turned to rubber and peeled off.

1 day in and a couple rides n the super glue is holding gas mix.

Re: Solex gas tank repair fix ???

I bought one of those Hungarian Solexes they were selling back in the early 2000s. Brian believes it may be one of the last ones. Not long after I got it the gas tank started leaking. It turned out to be cracked where the gas line fitting screws into it. The place where I bought it sent me a new one.

"Cyanoacetate is underated" Super glue is actually Cyanoacrlate. It was originally developed as a liquid bandage for battlefield use during the Vietnam war.

^i use it to mend cuts all the time but thought it was developed from an earlier war. couple things i recently discovered about cyanoacrylate is it needs a tiny bit of moisture to catalyze hence it sticking to skin easily n quick. Theres also a buncha different mixes w different properties, quick set spray, releasing fluid and it bonds rubber to metal amazingly.

Also classified as a wicking adhesive because its thin viscosity allows it to pull into the smallest of cracks. (edited)

Great post...please keep us updated.

Gerald, your Solex was definitely in the last container of Solexes that was shipped over here.

Re: Solex gas tank repair fix ???

Try 3m 800 sealant. It’s flexible and fuel/ oil resistant. Used it on everything from glass, metal, plastic and has not failed.

There used to be a sealer called Sealer 1000 used in the marine business. I think it has been discontinued but it had a dark reddish brown color and was gas resistant.Omc marine specified using it to seal the halves of outboard lower units.

Seems this is the replacement :

No single part adhesive will hold up to gas. I have tried a bunch and no go. (edited)

An update on the sealant I recommended earlier in the thread…Unfortunately, the JB plastic bonder has failed. I woke up yesterday morning to the smell of gasoline in the house. My scooter which was in the garage was surrounded by a gas puddle. The sealant let loose from the plastic tank. Lasted about 26 months. 🥲.

Amazingly I just found a 1980 NOS tank with side fuel level guage on EBay.

Thanks for the update...and nice score on that tank!

Treats also has steel tanks available.

Re: Solex gas tank repair fix ???

Totally normal JBOT /

This might seem an odd idea but I’ve done it to many weed wacker cracked plastic tanks to repair. It’s generally ugly but I’ve never had a leak after.

I use a soldering iron on plastic tanks that are cracked. Remelts the original plastic and seals cracks. If there’s extra plastic on the edge the tank doesn’t need, I’ll scrape it off and add it to the cracked area.

In the case of a 2 part tank like this maybe focused hot air or small low propane torch could do the same thing to melt the parts together

Update: 4 months in and not a drop of gas leaking. CA for the win.

Re: Solex gas tank repair fix ???

i love that the best solution is superglue. hell yea
