Piaggio Ciao 1971ish early side panel bolt

Greetings! I posted my new 1971ish Piaggio Ciao on the general discussion forum and have it mostly sorted out. Question on early side panel bolts (yellow Ciao).

The side panel bolt retainers on the early Ciao are different from the later Ciao (see pictures, green is a 1977). I'm looking for some early side panel bolts but all I can find is the later ones. I ordered some of the later ones, so I have new ones and a few old ones (from the 1974 and 77) Ciaos I have, but they are too big, they don't fit. At first it looked like somebody took a hammer to the bolt retainers, but they are all like that.

Any ideas on either: Where to get "early" bolts, or what options you've used to hold these in? I'm thinking either a panel fastener, or tack weld a nut, or zip ties... or ???

Thank you!

Re: Piaggio Ciao 1971ish early side panel bolt

Why not simply widen the smaller slots to accept the bigger 'bolts .

Or , cut/grind the bigger bolts down to fit the smaller slots .

Thank you! Yea I thought of taking a file or dremel to the bolts or retainers. I may try thinning a bolt and see how that goes. I was just in Italy three weeks ago and should have had the sense to pick my suitcase with Ciao parts! Next time!

These are not actually the original bolts, but machined replacements. That's why they are so pricey.

Re: Piaggio Ciao 1971ish early side panel bolt

Thanks, to close the loop - here is the picture from the seller's site on eBay. At least this gives me something to shoot for, my suspicion is also the side covers are different also... Time for browsing at the local hardware store.

Re: Piaggio Ciao 1971ish early side panel bolt

yes the side covers are a little different but can be routed out. I'm missing 1 of the smaller ones that go toward the front of the bike. You probably could file down one of the smaller new style. I had thought about it but never tried.
