Tomos A3MS ignition fault

Hi,

I'm having trouble with my Tomos I'm restoring.

I'm getting no spark at all.

This ped has been messed about with in the past, there's no loom so I'm working from scratch.

I hope I'm correct in using the black wire from the stator straight to the coil. Do I need anything else?

The coil is tested and works fine, plug is new.

I've attached the stator, it's the Ikras 12v 50w. The wiring has been played with, is it correct? (I've moved the windings back so you can see better)

The condenser is new, but it could be faulty? I have one from my mini i could use, but it would have to be external, where would I put it?

New condenser is irrelevant if your points are old and crusty, have you at least filed/sanded them?

They're brand new!

I've just tested the ignition winding and it's open circuit 🤦🏼‍♂️

Yep, that'll do it haha. Post on the buy/sell forum for a stator and buy one for $30-40 or whatever instead of messing with this one (edited)

That stator is filthy . Spray it down with brake cleaner .

You wouldn't expect any other piece of electronics to function correctly being like that . Don't expect this stator to either .

You'll likely find that little wire is grounded to the coil core .

One side of the coil winding needs to be grounded. Looks like that's grounded to me. If you're not getting continuity from the black wire straight off the coil to ground the coil is bad.

The circled end if the coil wire is loose. The one on the lighting side is attached to the core, so I'm guessing this should also be.

Cleanliness is imperitive also change out that crank seal its bad too.

If you isolate a coil you can charge it with a AA battery.

Then if it's good it will magnetize if not it will heat up at the fault. Nail polish will recoat any stripping.

I don't know what you mean by core, the coil? It's just a bundle of copper wire, one side has to be grounded and the other side goes out to the condenser/points. Ground the side that's broken or whatever, or save your time and buy another stator off this forum if you can't find the break.

The talk is about coils . What would have you thinking anything other than a coil core ?

In case you didn't know , the core is that laminated steel piece that the coil is wrapped around . ;)

I misread what he had written, I thought he was saying the other side of that particular coil was soldered to the core, which wouldn't make sense considering the points/condenser wire is coming off of it. I was confused because I thought he was saying that the other side of that coil was therefore grounded, which didn't make sense.

Either way, if he's measuring each end of the coil with a multimeter and he has no continuity he's got a break in the coil somewhere and it's much cheaper and easier to just get a new coil. You can rewind it or try to fix it but I really don't think it's worth the trouble.

I've rewound a few coils and had good results . It really doesn't take all that long .

But , I like messing with what doesn't work to see if I can make it functional .

Good job on posting the problem and the results. It gives the solution and conclusion for future readers as no spark possible issues.

Anything else that come up just stick to this post as its helpful too as a referance.
