1976 Garelli Super Sport Drive Gear Wont Come Off...

Aaron Dacanay /

Hello all,

So my friend and I are trying all we can to remove the drive flywheel gear. We have heated up the gear as much as we could without getting it red hot and it still doesnt pull off. We used an electric impact and that wont remove it. We also tried pounding on the opposite side of the shaft. Are we doing something wrong here???

Your doing it right, get your puller staighter, heat up the gear just the hub for a minute, tighten puller by using a leather glove to keep the puller from spinning and impact, hit center of puller with hammer, repeat till pops off.

It might break loose violently, have something under it in case it falls

I would start by lubing up the threads on the gear puller with some light weight oil. Some penetrating oil around center of gear might help. Its a tapered shaft that the gear is mounted on so they are difficult to remove. Keep in mind that is a cast iron gear and can break. If you insist on using heat keep it away from the shaft otherwise the heat will expand the shaft and lend you no advantage. (edited)

If you are shock-loading the puller, than it won't ever come off

Try this. Remove the puller and then, with a brass hammer or a hammer and drift, carefully hit the gear around it's circumference. Heating the gear near the shaft first will help.
