Will someone post a pic or two of what the battery and wiring are supposed to look like?!? Mine is a mess under there and I have no idea where to start. TIA ✌🏻

Post a pic of what you have .
Here's a free copy of the service manual ( same for all years ) :

Looks pretty neat to me .
The only wires exposed are the positive and negative battery connections .
A note of caution ::
If you pull either of the tanks , be sure the routing of the fuel and specially the oil lines are free of any kinks when putting them back in place .
Is the battery box cover necessary? I’m still searching for one of those and a lens to cover the fuel gauge
From your need for a fuel gauge lens , I think you have a early '80 model .
Check your frame # to see if it's NO.3102978~ or before , if so it's a early model .
Then , here's a cover that should work :
The gauge lens is part of the gauge and that is NLA .
Does the gauge leak ?
If so , maybe seal the hole or replace the tank with a late model tank , with no gauge .Late model fuel tank
The above cover is not necessary . It just keeps things in order and neat ( not rubbing on each other ) .
The seat support bracket is needed .
Have you tried removing the gauge and taking it apart to see if it could be sealed , internally ? Post pics of that gauge taken apart .
If that can be done , maybe find a lens that could cover the gauge face .
What do you think that is though? If I can scrape it off, maybe an external sealant would work?
Do you want to use the gauge ?
If so do as I suggest .
If not , just pull the gauge out and find a plug to fill the hole , or , get a later model tank .
Putting any external sealant on that gauge is simply a band aid . Might work , might not .
Looks like your hunt begins for parts to make it work or a later model tank .
Or , visit Ace hardware and fit a nice tight drain stopper in that hole for a couple bucks , which you may want to do anyway , while you track down parts .
At least , you'd be able to use the tank .
You, sir, are the best 😀 thanks for all of your help ✌🏻 I’m going to do the drain stopper until I get another gauge & assembly. It’s in the works but may take a couple of weeks to get here; with the lens!! (edited)
