Puchi cdi timing issue

Brian Kin_duh_mo /

Hey all so I am in process of rebuilding a 77 Newport. Basically everything is new minus the crankshaft, gears and case. I am installing the cdi but it looks like the magneto is running backwards? Timing is showing way after tdc (if I had to guess I’d say 15 degrees after tdc Or before if it is running backwards) Arrow on the flywheel/magneto points counterclockwise but when the bike is idling it is spinning clockwise.

I’ve had the stator plate moved as far as it would go either direction. Fully clockwise the bike just backfired and won’t even start. Fully counterclockwise and in the middle Bike idles fine but bogs down when the throttle is turned. Do I need to move the pick up to the other side of the stator? Or flip the ignition coil?

Thanks y’all. I am timing stupid so I may be doing this all wrong

Re: Puchi cdi timing issue

uh, is your wheel spinning backwards as well?

Re: Puchi cdi timing issue

You probably need to set it off keyway

Re: Puchi cdi timing issue

Yeah that arrow should point clockwise if I am not mistaken .I wonder if you have a flywheel for a za50 instead of e50?

Re: Puchi cdi timing issue

Is your engine a e50 or the za50?Because if it's a e50 the arrow on the flywheel should point clockwise.

Re: Puchi cdi timing issue

Is it a treats cdi? If it is the arrow does not matter wrks either way

yeah so i finally read something that confirms that. i ghuess since this cdi is for both e50 and za50 i guess the arrow is more for the za50.

I was super confused for a long time yesterday trying to wrap my head around that! hahah i was like what the fuck...whys this crazy shit always happen to me.

Re: Puchi cdi timing issue

Oh ok,I didn't know that. The bike I am working on now is the first Puch I have had with a cdi.I always had the stock points.I am not sure why the timing will not get right.Maybe you could try flipping the stator.

The Treats CDI is specific to E50/ZA50, its the same basic components, but yeah, you'll have to go off keyway to get it to fire on the E50.
