Points won’t open

Hey guys. I have a 1978 or 79 garelli Gransport. I cleaned the points to try to get spark and tired to reset the gap. After I loosened the screw, I put the gauge in, tightened the screw and it just stays closed all the time now. What am I doing wrong? First time messing with points. Watched a few YouTube videos but it’s hard to see on most of them.

Re: Points won’t open

The piston is at or just past tdc when you set the gap right?

They are spring loaded. There are two slots on the points to put a screwdriver between, turning opens or closes them. Have the screw just loose enough so you can adjust without the spring overtaking the adjustment. Set the gap at the highest position of the opening to the middle of the spec range. Check timing and make fine adjustments with points within that range. If you only lightly cleaned them, you should be able to get the correct gap and timing without having to move the stator plate.

Yes the piston is at TDC

Re: Points won’t open

Make sure you are setting them a little past top dead center. Sometimes it helps to tighten the points just enough so that you can still adjust them but also stay put to where you set them, put the feeler gauge in there, push them closed on the gauge, then tighten securely.

Re: Points won’t open

Try using 2nd screwdriver to hold points body closed with feeler gauge inserted, in order words feeler guage should stay in place hands free, and tighten the holding screw.

Re: Points won’t open

What Chris said, hold then closed on the guage

I may be missing something. Where are the slots? When I cleaned them I put the gauge in and loosened the main screw and they snapped shut, and now I obviously missed something and definitely screwed something up! I’m just not sure where to put the second screwdriver in. Sorry if these seem like stupid questions, I’ve just never worked with points before. (Cover off for easier viewing for help)

Re: Points won’t open

Try this. With flywheel on and piston just past tdc loosen red so points move freely. Insert feeler guage at blue. Pressure in direction of green arrow. Tighten red.

Put the flywheel on so the low side of the lobe is in line with the brown part of the points do you dont break it off.

Thank you guys. I will try this!

When all else fails.

Set it at bdc close points tighten.

Reason is if the feelerfoot is too worn it will open due to the lobe height. I had some Cev flys the Windows refuse to align at tdc..
