79’ Motobecane 50V won’t start, Horn goes crazy

I just picked up a 79 50V, and when I tried to start it the horn goes crazy. The switch on this doesn’t work, so I’m only assuming it must be stuck in the off position. I took off the switch I found these 2 wires snipped, a gray wire and a brown one. Any info would be greatly appreciated!

It is stuck in the off position, I don't have mine anymore, but will try and dig up the service manual, rotate the switch to run if you can, many people hardwire these bikes as that switch is a weak=point, might be something in the wiki about this?

Re: 79’ Motobecane 50V won’t start, Horn goes crazy

That's the kill switch. When the switch is turned to off the horn blows. Moby's fart when turned off yes.lol look for a schematic in the wiki and find out what you need to connect.

Re: 79’ Motobecane 50V won’t start, Horn goes crazy

They don't do that if you kill them with the de-comp, I don't know why they even had the kill switch.

Re: 79’ Motobecane 50V won’t start, Horn goes crazy

Yeah I never used it either, but it did freak me right the fuck out the first time I used it.

Re: 79’ Motobecane 50V won’t start, Horn goes crazy

The on/off dial on the switch seems to be stripped out, the brown wire and violet wire which is cut at the switch, are the same colored wires going into the horn. Should i clip those wires at the horn, or leave them alone, reconnect the 2 at the switch and get a new switch? Going through Wiki and wiring diagrams, doesnt really show what the end result would be if i clipped the same color wires at the horn and switch. Its a clean Type A (30 mph) 50V totally complete with the original spark plug and I just want to take this out for a ride so bad! This horn is so annoying! Thanks

that switch is done, just snip and tape separate. check for cracks on coil, powdery white?. and of course spark, if so, shoot some premix in plug hole and off ya go.

The horn kill is the coolest thing about a Moby. It freaks people out when you kill it. Used to ride my old Moby to the bar and park it infront of a bunch of people hanging outside.

If you kill for for a few seconds when going along 20 mph it sounds like an air raid siren, then you switch it back on and it makes a horrendous backfire. Worth fixing as stock just for those reasons, nevermind that it tells you it's off before you pedal your ass off and it won't start.

Agree completely. I love the air raid siren/backfire combo.

Got it running!!! I just clipped the brown and violet wires at the horn, crossed my fingers the switch wasn’t in the off position, and started peddling like crazy and pop..pop... it started up. It runs really good, thanks everyone!!

Re: Motobecane fixed

Just FYI: don’t get in the habit of sitting on the seat while your Moby is on the center stand, and never start it while sitting on it when on the stand. These center stands are made of spaghetti, and they bend easy. Pretty soon, your back tire won’t be off the ground anymore. A well tuned Motobecane will start with one kick, standing next to the bike.

thanks for reporting back its good for others in the future looking up answers to problems.

Yea the stands are almost as strong a paperclip. The aftermarket one I brought one time was too long. Realized that after I put it on but I was able to straighten my old one anyway. I used to start mine while pushing it off of the stand. Just let off of the choke as soon as it starts moving and it starts purring.

Re: Motobecane fixed

For sure, I just stand to the right, and its one kick and she fires right up! No need to actually get on it to start peddling. Just has a little problem staying idle but runs amazing! Good score for $420!

Re: Motobecane fixed

They all ought to have stands like the model "7" does, anyone try and retrofit?

Re: 79’ Motobecane 50V won’t start, Horn goes crazy

Is the horn making more of a beep beep or boop boop noise?
