My exhaust looks like this:
The inside looks like this:
I'd like the exhaust to NOT be covered in leaky shit so I figured I would throw it in the Weber and repaint it.
Inside looks good right? And when it came off the engine there was no gasket, should there be a crush washer?
Bike was riding fine before so I figured I'd break it.
I'm cleaning the carb also so hopefully that fixes what ever was leaking on pipe.
I started by blasting this thing with oven cleaner.
Tomorrow I'm gonna hose it off and paint it with the oven black.
I might sand it?
Since the inside is fine
Why not clean the inside , too ?
That way you start out like brand new . ;)
And , yes , sand as much of the rust off as possible .

Glad I blasted the inside. So much carbon came out
Indeed on the right track- oven cleaner inside and out - give the outside a goodly scrub with a wire brush and a couple of squirts of your fave high temperature paint
Got job for sure. A clean inside is way more important that a clean outside. I love using grill paint on exhaust pipes it hold up real well.
Did I over do it?
Also discovered a crack at the top of the pipe.... is it trashed?

I'd weld it ( inside ) and run it .
I'd also run a support off the bolt that holds the rear cap on , if there isn't one there already .

There is a bracket that braces it, where would a support off the end attach? Got a pic?

If that bracket affords enough support , run it .
Drill-stop the ends of the crack and weld it from the inside and you will be golden.

Get yourself a cheaper wire welder and practice - before you know it you will be better at welding and have to use a grinder less.

got a guy to TIG weld it for me $25 - picking it up tomorrow.

I highly recommend A-1 welding in north hollywood.... he did this for 25 bucks.
Now....
Got the VHT 1200
Do I spray every inch of the pipe? The thread and nut ? Cap and bolts?
Sweet. Ceramic header paint holds up great.
I over sprayed some. Sanded it.... resprayed. ...
I always fuck up spraying shit.
