77 Newport Kickstand Pedal Clearance Issue

I recently picked up a 77 Puch Newport that I had been told was sitting in a garage since the 80's. A new petcock and some carb cleaning has it running pretty good, but the right side pedal (bike chain side) is making contact with the kick stand while it is folded up.

Before I take an angle grinder and hack off the interferring material on the leg of the stand, I figured I should inquire if there is an adjustment of some sort that I am overlooking?

There is some damage to the cover that holds the kickstand pivot, one of the corners near a bolt hole got wacked off. One of the stops is also cracked and loose, but not in immeadiate danger of falling off (I can grab some pics if it would be helpful).

The right pedal arm does not appear to be significantly bent, so I don't think that is the cause. I don't see any bolts/pins in that side pedal crank, so I'm hesitant to try bending it. There is what appears to be a grease fitting where the shaft meets the pedal crank, is it one piece?

Its interfering about 1/8-1/4", and I can force the stand in slightly enough to prevent contact, but thats mainly just from the slop in the pivot point, it won't stay there.

The only other solution I can think of is to remove both stops and slide both over by the 1/4" and weld them back up to make the adjustment.

Any thoughts or tips, seems like some is not aligned how it is supposed to. Everything appears to be stock, so I'm fairly confidient it isn't a wrong part number or something obvious.

Have you unbolted it? You shouldn't need to cut anything, if the stand is bent or the clampy is broken I'd just replace it. Hell someone here would probably give you one.

I should have mentioned that, I did unbolt it, and other than the cracked stop on one side, the stand itself appeared to be symmetrical and not noticably bent. It was really filthy, so cleaned it up and freshened the grease and put it back together. I had been hoping there was some slight adjustment in the cap/?clampy? (not sure the correct term) that hold the stand pivot section in place. But not luck there.

The broken corner I spoke of doesn't appear to adversly effect the "clampy" alignment. I do need to reweld that other stop at some point anyways, so I suppose just cutting the other one off and reattaching it wouldn't be much more effort...

I was just hoping there was some kind of adjustment I was overlooking.

Re: 77 Newport Kickstand Pedal Clearance Issue

i think your making this too complicated. Theres no grease nipple on the end of the pedal shaft where it connects to pedal arm.

Basically u just need something to stop the center stand from travelling too far up when retrieved. if u have a welder put it to use.

Some Puch pedal shafts do have a grease nipple zerker fitting. And yes, those are one piece meaning the pedal can't be removed separately from that side. Hard to get accurate info on this forum sometimes...

I would either weld the tab on the kickstand back up or get another OEM used Maxi-length kickstand that is complete and see if that fixes your problem first. Also if you can post pics of the contact point that would be helpful too!

I can tilt the stand enough with it folded up to get clearance, but its really just rotating within the clearance of the pivot bearing slot, not actually causing any deflection of the cap/clampy

Last one is pulling on the opposite leg out and up, causing the inner leg to go in and down. The stand itself doesn't appear bent.

Re: 77 Newport Kickstand Pedal Clearance Issue

sheez, was totally confused by what u were saying, pictures are helpful. two things, u can shim the pedal shaft out, or vise the pedal arm and whack it, or some combunation of the 2.

Re: 77 Newport Kickstand Pedal Clearance Issue

You are positive those pedal arms aren't bent? They look bent...
