Re: Fracture in cyl. Skirt what to do?

I'd think about simply cutting that crack out of play .

Make that 'window' a bit bigger . Chamfer the edges and run it .

No ring concerns that low .

Re: Fracture in cyl. Skirt what to do?

Carefully cut it out, mind the nikasil as it will flake off if you use a carbide bit. I recommend a tiny dremel cut off wheel.

Dirty30 Dillon /

I've had good luck end-drilling the crack, and then cutting out the section of damaged skirt.

Re: Fracture in cyl. Skirt what to do?

Drill stop the crack first then cut the cracked portion off and smooth the edges

Re: Fracture in cyl. Skirt what to do?

What bit do i use to drill

The reason you drill it is to stop the crack from continuing so what you want to do is get the smallest drill bit that gives you a tiny hole and then if it's cast iron you'd use nickel-iron rod and repair it but then you have to dress it really well on the inside...

I have a batavus overbore that I'm still afraid to run 42.5 mm

Due to the oversquared 45mm stroke it goes deep...

Re: Fracture in cyl. Skirt what to do?

#30 or a 3mm bit, drill through right at the end of the crack. You can use 24hrs epoxy on the hole, lay it on the side so gravity will draw the epoxy into the crack, use tape so it does not dribble out and onto the work bench. Epoxy will help ward against it separating from the casting, the hole will hep to stop the crack from progressing...

Re: Fracture in cyl. Skirt what to do?

I would just remove the portion of the skirt that has the crack.

Overpriced Parts /

I agreed to drill where the crack ends, but why not I get a new kit

, cylinder or whatever else, I mean $50-$100 to be reliable for years is worth the savings of a broken skirt!

Re: Fracture in cyl. Skirt what to do?

id practice your technique on your old piston first or else youll end up just buying a new one like Ken suggested

I thought we are talking about cylinder skirts .

True, but...every kit Ive seen comes with a piston. I suppose one piston could be saved as a spare tho.

I would definitely try to salvage that cylinder too....idk I guess I'm a sucker for a challenge. (edited)

The challenge of not frivolously blowing money . LOL

Not to be a downer but is it worth the bottom end to try to save it? did you ever see the Carnage that is possible?

Re: Fracture in cyl. Skirt what to do?

I have to agree with Overpriced Parts. If your not sure of what you need and how to do then it can get costly and not worth the headache.

Re: Fracture in cyl. Skirt what to do?

If you never buy a lotto ticket , you'll never win it . ;)

Re: Fracture in cyl. Skirt what to do?

The real question is how the crack got there. Was the cylinder dropped? Does the piston slide smoothly into the cylinder without out the rings installed? If it does, look for any scuffing on the piston. Do you have bore gauges to check roundness at that location?? (edited)

Looks like the cases were put together with gasket maker instead of the Oem gaskets...

It got crushed ...

Re: Fracture in cyl. Skirt what to do?

shit, yeah thats what i meant

Re: Fracture in cyl. Skirt what to do?

I got the cyl used from MA did not notice the fracture till after to much time had passed. The piston will move freely at least with the old piston. Ill try with the new one.
