Moby decomp cable

My brand new cable snapped at the cylinder. It looks like vibration caused rubbing and cut right through the cable.

Is this a common issue?

I haven't looked too close, but probably going to shorten it, knarp, and reattach it.

Is there a work around to the decomp? I've never owned a bike with a decomp, can I ignore it and leave it shut? Is it really required to start the bike, will it be more difficult?

Maybe just leave the cable off all together and use a piece of string or screwdriver to start/shutoff.
