Puch e50 bearing noises.

I am thinking of purchasing a 1980 maxi located around the corner from me for $200.

It starts, idles, stops, and the tank is clean. The only thing wrong is a terrible noise. The best way I can describe it is that it sound like when you whistle with a blade of grass, sorta like a kazoo. I think it's a bearing noise, but I just want to know if it is more likely the big end bearing in the crank, or is this something that can only be known once disassembled. I have had five Puchs all with e50s, and I haven't run into this problem yet. Thanks!

What does the trans oil look like? When in doubt drop the motor and open it up.

Squeaky whistling is often a head leak, squealing may be dry trans or stuck clutchparts, binding bearings etc. Usually crank and bigend bearing fails have a very grindy sound, it's a chunky not smooth surface rolling and maybe rubbing sounds like rocks in a tubler or griding things dragging. squeaks are a rotating part contacting and rubbing a static part.

could No trans oil, I had a hobbit with a bad trans side bearing once that made the noise you’re describing. Rebuilds are easy and fun on E50s if it’s the crank stock cranks are cheap and abundant. Given that It runs already sounds like a reasonable deal for 200!

It's possible. E50s are extremely easy. I rebuild all my engines, new crank and all - even when keeping it stock. Since I don't have time right now to work on it, It's the difference between riding it or parking it until I do. Plus I'm just curious.

Sorry for my absence. I got it sorted out, and I thought I'll give you guys an update. It turned out that Wild was spot on with his explanation. The noise was actually two unrelated issues. The squeel was the rust built up in the big end bearing. a fatty mixture and long ride cleared that right up. That grind had me scratching my head for a bit. My first thought was the clutch bell rubbing, and that ended up being correct. Everything pointed to this, but when I removed the clutch cover, no evidence of rubbing on anything, anywhere. The tranny oil had no metallic glitter in it, even after three spill and fills. Long story short, the retaining snap ring, was loose. About half way off, but still secured enough to need the snap ring pliers to remove and re-seat it. the play between the clutch and the crank were proportional to the revs, so If I actually rode it WOT for more than a few minutes, I might have solved this sooner. Of course, I just ended up rebuilding it anyway, but this was bugging me.
