Maxi doesn't start as well with pedals.

I have a strange issue. I just got my 1979 Maxi going. But it is easier to start by holding the clutch in and grabbing the back wheel and spinning it. It cranks right up. But using the pedals is not as effective. I did have to remove the clutch cover to replace a broken actuator lever and had to adjust the clutch but it seems to be ok judging by how easy it is to start by grabbing the wheel. Any ideas? Maybe the freewheel is slipping?

thats pretty cool, ive never been able to start a moped by holding on starter clutch n turning wheel, but i've never tried either.

Yes that is how we did it back in the day after we took the pedals off. As long as your bike ran well it it was a piece of cake.

Btw It is easier with a cut fender because you can grab the tire. With the full fender like I have (for now anyway!) you have to grab the spokes.
