CDI for Puch Magnum

Hello everyone. First post here, been reading up in the background for a while. Just got into the moped life this past summer with a '77 Maxi. Been a lot of fun.

So I just got a custom 1979 magnum. ZA50 motor, no top end at all (going to run a 70cc kstar) and discovered it also has no ignition system at all. I watched a youtube video where a guy threw a CDI strator on a magnum, seemed pretty simple, but I'm also a complete n00b with this stuff. Is this CDI pack from treats all I need to order? Or do i need to get more hardware along with it? Sidenote, I also have to get a taillight to put on. So i only want to run head and tail light, kill switch, and ignition. Saw a wiring diagram on here somewhere too.

Included a picture of my empty nest. Thanks guys.

I wouldn’t wanna follow you with no brake light, I don’t know but I think in Michigan you need one ,

If you have the stock wiring harness I would run the stock ignition Stator, I never had any good luck with that cheep CDI holding up but maybe you will

Nate, you need a brake light. I'm down the road for you and I can wire your bike. PM me or do it yourself.

Definitely throwing a brake light on.

I do not have the stock wiring harness. I have no part of the electrical system to this bike, other than the headlight being ground and another wire running down the frame for it.

I've read back and forth on this CDI. What are some other options?

Re: CDI for Puch Magnum

I got the same replys. it rips, it sucks , I love it and i hate it. it all comes down to try it or not. sorry i know its no help but as my mother used to say "you pay your money and you take your chances"

Re: CDI for Puch Magnum

I been using the treats cdi for the past 4 years on my tomos the only problem I ever had was the trigger coil on the stator plate went bad replaced it awhile ago it's been running ever since. Fyi this cdi has unlimited revs which is better than any stock cdi my opinion.

Re: CDI for Puch Magnum

If you need a wiring harness ebay has one or you might ask at sunday morning motors (edited)

Do I need the wiring harness or can I just wire it myself? Like I said, totally new to this. And there is nothing on this bike. I see the harness on ebay, but it just looks like its all the wires "under one roof". Can't I just run them myself? Im just looking to do the headlight, brake light, and kill switch.

Re: CDI for Puch Magnum

just sell that n get one that runs, just do it.

no thanks bud, interested in learning and doing it.

Re: CDI for Puch Magnum

there are wiring diagrams in the wiki. its not hard at all to duplicate. some wire strippers, heat shrink, a pack of connectors and a junkyard wire harness to take apart. thats all you need.

Re: CDI for Puch Magnum

I did see one on eBay. It might still be there.
