Morini M1 Clutch Cover Plate Damaged

Charles McCusker /

So I'm rebuilding an M1 and discovered previous owner put the clutch cover plate on backwards and the clip wore through it. what's the purpose of this plate? keep shoes from moving towards the bell? finding one without buying a whole clutch strikes me as tricky. Considering running without it for now. Thoughts?

Re: Morini M1 Clutch Cover Plate Damaged

It's been a LONG time since I disassembled an M1, but I don't remember THAT being at the clutch.

yes its held on using a retaining ring on the backside of the clutch facing the bell, it covers the shoes. I assure you, it's part of the clutch assembly. I'm just not sure why it's there, but the one that came in this motor is clearly screwed. (edited)

yup that's the ticket. But ya, what's this thing in there for?

Re: Morini M1 Clutch Cover Plate Damaged

If it acts as a shim, you'll have to make up the difference in its thickness. Contact `Gnarly Al' in Columbus and see if he's got it or will sell you a parts engine. He's just off Riverside Drive(rt.33) easy to find. (edited)

it doesn't function as a shim. it's below the actual shimmed part of the clutch. I did think of that tonight, I'm sure Al has one if need be. He has a couple sets of puch spokes I wanted to pick up for a couple bikes anyway.

There ya go!

I'd still love to know why it's part of the clutch assembly. The engineer in me feels like this was an engineer over engineering a problem they thought could be an issue, but I could just as easily be overlooking the problem it solves.

Re: Morini M1 Clutch Cover Plate Damaged

Well, it was built with it by Morini engineers, who had many other engine types before it came along. It kina has the look of what I've seen on cars called an `oil-slinger' ,not sayin that's its function.

I rode my first moped,a Motomarina sebring, for several thousands of miles with the M1, until BJ put me wise to bolting up an MO2 for hill-pulling gearing.

Ya that was one of things I thought it could do is regulate/throw oil off the clutch towards the bell.
