1982 honda express Nc50 2 speed idle issue

Only after a decent amount of riding time that I have this issue. If I am at a dead stop the bike will go up to 10 mph without me even touching the throttle. If I put it on the kick stand the back wheel spins like crazy. But doesn't do that at the first part of my ride... it idles nicely for the first 15 minutes of riding.

Is this as easy as adjusting a screw on the carb?

I know this model has the automatic choke , not sure if it's an issue with that?

Any insight would be really helpful. Thanks!

Re: 1982 honda express Nc50 2 speed idle issue

Maybe an air leak , once the motor is heat soaked .

Re: 1982 honda express Nc50 2 speed idle issue

I dont know anything about those auto chokes. But you need to remember that a cold engine needs more fuel. If the choke was at fualt after warmed up the engine would die from too much fuel, not race or increase idle. Increasing idle or "racing" are indicative of a lean condition. Lean means too much air or not enough fuel.

Look elsewhere if it starts fine because the auto choke is most likely working as it should. (edited)

Okay so probably an air leak or clogged carb. This week I will spray around with brake cleaner and see if there are any leaks. If not then I will pull the carb off and clean it out thoroughly.

I should probably run an inline filter as well.

I have the oil injector still hooked up so even if I'm lean on fuel will there still be oil mixing into the cylinder?

Re: 1982 honda express Nc50 2 speed idle issue

Injector does its job regardless of carb issues. Dirty carb wont cause whats happening. You have an air leak on 40 year old gaskets and seals. Could also be a non working gas cap vent too. (edited)

Okay, thank you. I will spray around and see if I can locate a leak. I will look into the gas cap vent as well.

One other question for ya Live Evil. (And this might be the wrong place to post this) I've attached two photos. I was cleaning my carb and the inlet that the oil injector goes into the carb just wiggles out. Is there a way I can get this to stay in? Thread locker or something?

Re: 1982 honda express Nc50 2 speed idle issue

Sorry , I'n not live evil .

Simply re-punch that elbow in place .

If you look closely , you'll see where the factory punched it . The two indents at about 9 and 3 from the elbow . A couple decent hits with a screwdriver and hammer should do .

Awesome, thank you! Got a lot to do this week. Excited to get this running like it should.

Bearing locker, its green and chemical resistant...oil, gas etc. (edited)

Anyone ever see this mod before? The person I bought the noped off of welded on another exhaust hole? May be a dumb question but would this cause me to be lean if I have the stock main jet?

Re: 1982 honda express Nc50 2 speed idle issue

Could yes if it flows more air.

What do you think I should do? Look for another used one? Or could I plug one of them somehow?

Again thank you for all the help!

Re: 1982 honda express Nc50 2 speed idle issue

Have you run the bike this way ? and if so , how long ?

I may be wrong , but , I doubt the 1/4" extra exhaust flow will harm anything but your ear drums . If it were at the head , it would likely be a much different story .

I've had the bike about a month, rode it a few times a week with it like this. I actually have the Iowa edition that tops out at 25 mph. Once I get to 25 it fourstrokes and won't go further. You're probably right and it's not harming anything.

Looks like an mlm prototype for the express, hi flow mojo pipe.

Huh, that's interesting. It's not obnoxiously loud. Pretty similar sounding to the normal pipe. I'm hoping the exhaust isn't causing me to run lean, I'm still toping out at 25mph. Which is what I want... I'm just keeping it stock.

What color/condition is the spark plug immediately after a fairly long wide open throttle ( about a mile should tell a good story ) .

Good call. I will buy some new plugs and do some chops this weekend as well.

Thank you!
