How much do I need the piece that just fell off?

noah wingren /

Hey all,

during my ride to work just now I lost the round black plastic piece from the exterior of my carburetor. AFAIK that's the air filter? but I never understood how it could be filtering much because it was just empty black plastic. Anyway, is there some reason I absolutely cannot do the 10min ride back home today without it? I have -.75¢ in the bank until tomorrow afternoon and would rather not leave the bike in this neighborhood.

This is the carburetor I've got:

and attached is the only image i have of the piece from when I was asking about a different issue.

Thanks in advance y'all!

The air filter? Without it, you will run lean and probably seize. You need a new filter or you need to retune your carburetor

upon further research it was almost certainly this one, but without the red part (Which, i assume, is the actual filter). SO it seems like I've actually been riding it without a filter this whole time. Weird. I'm gonna buy a filter but am less concerned now.

It's just an air box if there's no filter element in it. It reduces the airflow a little im sure, so you'll probably end up running leaner.

Just rubberband one layer of one of your socks to the carb and ride home. Or dont do anything and stop at a mcdonalds or some shit half way home or take it easy and dont try to blow it up

Idk 10 minutes is probably fine. It's just mopeds

o ok word good looking out! i'm sure it'll be ok. i'll rubber band a rag to it. i drive really slow anyway.

does this mean that when i replace it i should replace it with an airbox instead of a proper filter? or just put an actual filter and then retune it

just realized i forgot the link when i said that

Re: How much do I need the piece that just fell off?

Whatever you do, even if nothing, you need to re tune your carb. Your jetting is now a crap shoot.

Re: How much do I need the piece that just fell off?

Your over flow lines should not be connected

yes, old picture, i meant to mention that in case anyone noticed. for some reason it was sold to me like that with a hole sliced in the bottom, so i assumed it was damaged and replaced it with a non-split tube before i found out what it was. it currently has no tube there at all

I've never seen anyone run an air filter in Detroit.
