Jawa: What's Inside a Thyristor.

I had this in my junk pile for sometime and I just had to see inside. The least I wanted to do was salvage the connectors and make a new one as per the wiki.

Most antique radios quit working because of the capacitors failing. Just wondering if digging out the capacitor leads and adding an external capacitor would make it work. I'll order up some components and see.

Looks like if you cut at 1 1/4" you would have easier access to the leads instead of pushing your luck on a trip to the emergency room by using a utility knife.

This is most likely a waste of time but I'll end up with a spare anyhow.

Re: Jawa: What's Inside a Thyristor.

I know I saw the cannibalization of one before somewhere, but this hack worked anyway...

(I will still look for the thyristor autopsy)

Rebel, hadn't seen that before. Interesting. Wondering if there is any option like this for the thyristor/coil all in one type. I'm sure another generic coil and this would work. Since I'm new to this and was ordering from The Jawa Shop anyhow I just bought the proper parts. A lower cost local option is always a good thing.

Re: Jawa: What's Inside a Thyristor.

The 'all in one' has the same G, I, 1 terminals but no 15 because it has the coil built in.

Re: Jawa: What's Inside a Thyristor.

I recently built my own as per the diagram and packed everything into a centrum vitamin container. I didn't have time to test it yet but its not difficult to build.

Re: Jawa: What's Inside a Thyristor.

As per Rebel's post, I ordered one of these. Tough to beat for the price. Less expensive than when I last priced the discreet components to build one. The type Rebel posted was even less expensive.

Re: Jawa: What's Inside a Thyristor.

Those "Racing CDI" blue boxes are for 4 stroke, so the 'advance curve' is backwards for a 2 stroke (more advance at higher RPM). Just saying.

Re: Jawa: What's Inside a Thyristor.

Uh oh... Well I'll use this on something.

I always thought that the thyristor was just like on a Triumph it took any over voltages and it is in a capacitor it turned the Exodus amps and volts into heat and dissipated it through a heat sync
