Compression Issues

Trent Van Gilst /

I have been restoring an old 82 Piaggio bravo I bought, I have cleaned the carb, replaced the air filter, and the fuel lines and petcock. When I went to try and start it, it wouldn't fire, so I got the compression checker out and it came to just short of 50 PSI. I'm no expert but I'm pretty sure that is way to low. Does anyone know what the compression should be, and or how to fix it? I did remove the head but there was no gasket. Is that possibly part of my problem?

Re: Compression Issues

My bravo and ciao are around 150 psi

Try lapping your decomp valve. That’s likely the issue.

Do you think i could just use some buffing compound and a drill

Re: Compression Issues

Drill, yes. You can try buffing compound, But I’d pick up some valve grinding compound if it doesn’t work.

Re: Compression Issues

pull the cylinder off, most likely needs new rings(gotta measure and buy) and a cylinder hone. the decomp valve has a flathead slot so u can twist it back n forth. the head/cylinder sand on a flat surface.
