Garelli VIP hard to start and only idles when warm

So I scored a VIP and rebuilt the top end including a new piston. Replaced the 14/12 with a 15/15, new gear oil, and a bunch of other things. It has a B6 instead if a B5, running at 40:1 with an MLM exhaust. It will start and idle, it takes a bit if work. I have to do the pedal on the center stand thing and ride around my driveway to warm it up. Any ideas as to why this is? All my other mopeds fire right up and idle straight away. Thanks!

Re: Garelli VIP hard to start and only idles when warm

1.) Never sit on bike while on center stand.

Garelli, Motorbecane and Puch are all bad about bending the center stands to the point that the rear wheel will no longer clear the ground. You're making more work for yourself doing that.

2.) Gear oil is not suitable for any Garelli clutch ever. Garelli clutches use a rubber puck that will swell and cause problems if any lubricant with detergents are used.

Non-detergent 30w motor oil is recommended, with Non-detergent being the most important factor.

3.) I see no mention of carb cleaning or adjustments.

4.) Fuel flow to carb should be checked too. (edited)

Yes in time.

Check the simple stuff first tho.

That's what I meant when I said gear oil. Carb is fine. All the usual steps have been taken. This is somewhat unconventional.

If spark is good and bright and you've checked for vacuum leaks then its on to the 40 year old rubber crankshaft seals.

Forgot to mention in last post^

Have cleaned points cam and points?

Adjusted point gap?

Checked ignition timing?
