Hey Folks! Any advice on cleaning serious grime off of a Honda Express II engine? I'm seeing different scooter and motorcycle engine cleaning videos that seems like a simple "spray with engine cleaner, brush it and wipe it down" like this video:
Is this pretty standard? I'm a brand new owner so I know I'll make mistakes while I fix it up, I would just prefer not to ruin the entire engine just trying to clean it up.
Over the years , I've read a lot of praise and never a complaint about S100 Total Cycle Cleaner .
Dawn detergent and some elbow grease. when you rinse, don't blast it hard in center of bike to avoid pulling some of your wiring loose.

if you have any old gasoline around, that will do the trick. Sometimes I empty a tank and keep it around for starting fires or cleaning stuff. Kerosene as mentioned in another recent post followed by purple power, perhaps? WD-40 works pretty well as well. Simple Green or Dawn as Cap said. Old toothbrushes come in handy as well. As a matter of fact, I've got an engine to finish up myself.
Nice thing about S100 : spray it on let it sit and rinse it off .

$2 worth of kerosene and $3 worth of La's Awesome cleaner from the dollar store.
You are doing this in two steps. Kerosene does a very good job of breaking down grease, oil AND road tar/asphalt. Liberal amounts of soap washes all that away.

Ya, dont need to soap and rinse the chain. Just kerosene and compressed air.
Keep in mind that original 39 y.o. chain only had 262 miles on it.
If the chains old and theres too much wear on it then you're pissing in the wind.
Sprocket condition can help with chain evaluation. (edited)

Still , with that much crud coming off/out of that chain , I have to wonder if it has seen its best days .

I would bet that the quality of the 40 year old chain I cleaned is better than the china shit being sold today.
Ive put over 100 miles on that chain since cleaning and lubing. Have yet to need to clean, lube or adjust. Another 100 miles or so and I will clean and lube it again.

I totally agree with your quality statement . They just don't make 'em like they use to .
And , your example of worn is actually over worn . That chain could cause serious injury .
Early on in my life , I learned all about running too worn chains . I was running about 70 on the freeway and , without warning , the chain broke . It jammed/locked the rear wheel solid . Luckily , I was traveling a straight line and remained in control while a couple of swipes to either side took place before coming to rest at the side of the road .
Lolz ya that was on a Garelli that I parted out. The teeth tell the story without pulling on the chain.
Never rode it nor would have in that condition.
