E50 pinging bad, timing is good, points starting to open at 16-18mm before TDC , it’s a 78 Newport with oil injection. Would too high of octane cause this?

Too low octane could possibly cause pinging .
Check for carbon in the combustion chamber and maybe try new spark plug .

Is it stock?
Yes it’s stock. Carbon was cleaned off combustion chamber and piston a month ago. I will try different plug
Flywheel torqued properly?
Check for Crank play, maybe one of the connecting rod bearings gave way.
Pinging or clunking ?
Turn fly wheel back-and-forth by hand and see if you can hear feel a real bad clunk, it could be wristpin small crank end worn
What did you time it with, your eyeball or a guess. I would like to see the plug.

Do you really mean to say sixteen to eighteen millimeters? This is important.
I am not familiar with the method of timing an engine by measuring the distance of a punch mark on a flywheel to approximately the joint line in crankcases.
How do you generally time an E50?
Ha! (edited)
Find tdc and then measure 16-18 mm before it (to the right) then mark it on the flywheel and run it with a timing light.
